Julie Benton, Doris Day, is terrorized by her insanely jealous husband, Lyle, a concert pianist who swears he will kill her if she ever tries to leave. He nearly follows through when he floors the accelerator, forcing Julie to weave through the treacherous curves of a Pacific Coast road in a heartbeat of fear and resolve.

Desperate for safety, Julie turns to her friend Cliff Henderson, Jack Kelly. Cliff’s mounting suspicions that her first husband’s presumed suicide was actually murder add a chilling layer to her plight, making every move feel scrutinized and dangerous. To coax Lyle into admitting the truth, Julie engages in anxious pillow talk that reveals more than she would ever want, and she endures a miserable night in his arms, waiting for daylight and a real chance to escape.

She does escape, but Lyle is hot on her trail. Local police are unable to help much, since no crime has been documented and there’s no corroborating witness for his confession. Undeterred, Julie flees to San Francisco, her former home, with Cliff’s aid, where the police are more aware of the danger she faces—thanks in part to the busy crime blotter of a big city and a recent case in which an ex-husband murdered his wife.

Still stalked, Julie sheds the life she knew, adopts a new identity, and resumes her job as a flight attendant for Amalgamated Airlines. Stationed in New York, she must still make the occasional cross-country flight. On her first trip back to San Francisco, she bunkers down for the night with a fellow flight attendant, hoping anonymity will keep her safe.

Pretending to be a friend of Cliff’s, Lyle tricks an operator at his company into revealing that Cliff is planning a rendezvous with a friend in San Francisco that night. He lies in wait along Cliff’s path and trails his car. Cliff realizes he’s being followed, stops and confronts Lyle; after forcing Cliff at gunpoint to drive toward Julie’s location, Lyle shoots him and rifles his pockets for Julie’s address.

Amalgamated orders Julie to change plans and head straight to the airport for a flight back to New York as a fill-in. A gravely wounded Cliff manages to get word to the police that Lyle knows where Julie is, but he fades into unconsciousness before he can relay the exact location.

Piecing clues together, they locate the right apartment, but they’re too late to intercept Julie. Lyle learns of her flight and heads straight for the airport. With police unable to locate him, Julie is warned he may be on her flight. She spots him and informs the flight crew, but Lyle follows her into the cockpit, pulls a gun, and kills the pilot. He then seriously wounds the co-pilot before being killed by him. With the help of a doctor aboard, the co-pilot coaches Julie between painful blackouts. She is eventually guided down to the ground by the control tower, saving the lives of 60 passengers—and her own.

Lyle is dead, Cliff is not. In a flood of tears, Julie faces the long road ahead to rebuild her life, tempered by the memory of everything she endured and the strength it took to survive.
