About four days after the dramatic events of the previous film, the skilled assassin John Wick, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, embarks on a relentless quest to retrieve his beloved 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1, which has been stolen and is now in the hands of Abram Tarasov, played by Peter Stormare. Tarasov is aware of the mistake his nephew Iosef made when he killed John’s dog and took the Mustang, and he is frantically attempting to dismantle his operations before Wick arrives for vengeance. John has already exacted bloody retribution on Viggo, Iosef, and several of their henchmen over both his car and the tragic loss of his puppy.
Before he can execute his escape plan, John confronts Tarasov, ominously announcing his impending attack via a phone call. A fierce battle ensues, leading to the destruction of Tarasov’s men and significant damage to the car. In an unexpected turn, John chooses to spare Tarasov’s life, a move indicating a temporary desire for peace, and he returns home in his battered Mustang, a car steeped in personal significance and memories tied to his family.
Seeking a reprieve from his violent life, John attempts to shed his past by burying the tools of his former profession in his basement. However, he soon faces an unwelcome visitor in the form of Santino D’Antonio, played by Riccardo Scamarcio, the Italian crime lord who once assisted him in retiring and marrying Helen, portrayed by Bridget Moynahan. D’Antonio’s arrival turns John’s world upside down as he presents a “Marker,” a binding contract signified by a medallion that compels John to fulfill a service in exchange for his earlier allegiance. Refusing to comply due to his retirement, John incurs the wrath of D’Antonio, who retaliates by launching a grenade at John’s home, forcing him to narrowly escape into his garden.
After making his way to the Continental Hotel in New York, where Charon is played by Lance Reddick, John meets Winston, the hotel owner depicted by Ian McShane. Winston reminds John of the strict code that governs their world — primarily that the rules forbidding violence on Continental property and the obligation to honor Markers are resolute. With the High Table’s strict laws, John’s refusal to complete the task for D’Antonio marks him as Ex-Communicado, putting a target on his back for all assassins.
Reluctantly, John accepts D’Antonio’s assignment, which is to eliminate Gianna D’Antonio, played by Claudia Gerini, Santino’s sister, to enable him to claim her position at the High Table. With his old affiliations reignited, John retrieves his trusted suit and weapons while bracing for the confrontation ahead. D’Antonio assigns his loyal bodyguard, Ares, portrayed by Ruby Rose, to monitor John’s movements.
In a cunning move, John uses the catacombs beneath an ancient Roman temple to infiltrate Gianna’s celebratory party. When he finds her alone, the confrontation escalates into an emotional climax, as Gianna chooses to end her own life rather than succumb to the fate Santino has orchestrated for her. While escaping the scene, John combats Gianna’s security team, only to be confronted by Cassian, played by Common, her personal protector, leading to a brutal showdown that is halted by the sanctity of the Continental’s no-violence rule.
Returning to New York, the stakes rise as Santino places a staggering $7 million bounty on John’s head, falsely portraying it as revenge for his sister’s death. The aftermath sees numerous assassins failing in their attempts to end John’s life, including a rematch with Cassian, whom John spares out of respect. With his situation becoming increasingly dire, John turns to The Bowery King, embodied by Laurence Fishburne, who assists him with vital information and medical aid.
In a tense showdown, John finally tracks down D’Antonio, leading to a violent confrontation in the Continental. D’Antonio smugly disregards John’s wrath, believing himself safe within the hotel’s confines, only for John to defy the rules and eliminate D’Antonio in front of stunned onlookers.
The following day, Winston informs John that the repercussions of his actions have escalated into a global $14 million contract, severing his ties with the Continental and the underworld resources he once had access to. With an hour’s head start before his exile is made public, John prepares for the relentless onslaught of assassins now seeking his life, vowing to retaliate against anyone who dares to pursue him. Ultimately, he braves the urban chaos with his loyal dog at his side, facing an uncertain future.
