Pollack, an underworld gambler, is murdered, but before he dies he hides the $50,000 he just won gambling in a newspaper and kicks it under a car. The next day, Sach Jones [Huntz Hall] and Slip Mahoney [Leo Gorcey] are walking the street when they discover the paper and the cash. Gabe [Gabriel Dell], a reporter, runs a story about their find, drawing the attention of Pollack’s gangsters who lost the money. One by one, the money is wrested from the boys by the killers, who are immediately dispatched by the mysterious umbrella-wielding figure. The trio grows weary of the deaths surrounding them, and they decide to hand the money over to the police. The umbrella killer, unaware that the cash is now in police hands, is captured by officers who have been staking out the boys’ hideout.
After a short while, the police return the money to the boys since no one has claimed it. They donate $38,000 to various charities they promised to support, leaving $12,000 for taxes. An IRS officer arrives and takes the remaining $12,000, leaving them broke and still owing Louie. As they stroll out of the Sweet Shop, a stray $5 bill catches their eye, and they scramble for it, with Slip briefly winning the grab. But Louie steps in and takes the bill to settle their tab, restoring the ongoing tension and comic misfortune that trails the trio.
