Kanchi is a young woman who was married to an older husband who is about forty years her senior. He falls ill in his old age and dies, leaving Kanchi to face a society that demands her participation in the ritual of Sati. According to rigid social codes, she would burn with her husband’s corpse, but fate intervenes and she survives. She withdraws to the forest, taking shelter in a cave in the nearby jungle, where she begins a precarious new life.
Her absence awakens longing in her son, Ghanashyam, who, lonely without his mother, searches the woods and eventually finds her in the cave. The reunion is quiet but powerful, a moment of mutual recognition and relief. Yet they cannot remain in the village, as villagers would kill a woman who has survived Sati, no matter the circumstances. The two decide to seek a fresh start elsewhere, with Ghanashyam planning to move away to begin again. He asks his mother to stay hidden in the jungle long enough for him to gather their belongings.
Returning home, he speaks to his aunt and explains what happened in the jungle, asking for food and clothes to feed and clothe his mother. The help comes from family: Kanchi’s brother-in-law and his wife join the effort, providing support as they prepare to depart. Together, they form a fragile plan that keeps the possibility of safety and a new life within reach.
As the caravan of departure begins, a stark, unforgettable moment unfolds: they witness a woman who is meant to become Sati but cannot go through with it, escaping only to be struck down by the crowd during a funeral procession. The scene underscores the dangerous grip of tradition and the high price paid by those who resist. In the end, the story centers on resilience, the bond between mother and child, and a silent hope for a safer future away from the village’s judgment.
