Nagya, Mohan Agashe is a thakar tribal drummer who grows up listening to his father and develops a longing to become a punyavanta (pious one), a dream that sounds as rhythmic as the drum he is destined to play. He is drawn to the legend of the devimashi (queen bee), a figure who holds a sacred, almost ritual importance within his community. This early fascination with devotion and ceremony seeds a stubborn, single-minded focus in Nagya as he steps into adulthood, where music and belief intertwine to shape his sense of purpose.

In this world of drums and rites, a woman who has left her husband becomes deeply attached to Nagya, a bond that blooms into love. The woman, Chindhi, Smita Patil is drawn to the intense cadence of Nagya’s life and the raw honesty of his passion, and she follows him as he navigates the fragile line between tradition and personal longing.

Everything shifts when Nagya is cutting wood in the jungle and a swarm of bees descends upon him. The attack becomes a crucible moment: Nagya resolves to kill the bees, with the queen bee at the center of this vengeful impulse. Yet in his tribe, the queen bee carries a religious role, a symbol that complicates the line between harm and reverence. The conflict presses against Nagya’s stubborn will, pitting personal resolve against communal belief.

Driven by his obstinacy, Nagya chooses to flee the hive with his wife by his side, hoping to reclaim safety away from the swarm. He does succeed in dispersing the bees, but tragedy follows in the wake of retreat: his wife is killed as the conflict unfolds. The moment is brutal and quiet at once, because the act of violence and the cost of escape collide in a single, devastating stroke.

After the heat of the encounter, Nagya drapes himself in a haunting stillness and returns to the drum, not as a healer of pain but as a man who plays with an almost frantic intensity. He starts beating the drum again, the rhythms now sounding more like a fever than a celebration, a stark indication that grief and rage can coexist with ritual and memory. The film expresses this duality without softening—Nagya does not break down in the face of loss; instead, he seems compelled to create sound even as his personal world crumbles around him.

This is a classic paradox that the film makes its center: a character finds a type of victory in his revenge—“Jait re jait,” literally a WIN-WIN—yet pays an irreplaceable price on the other side. The result is a haunting meditation on how triumph can co-exist with tragedy, how devotion to tradition can collide with personal desire, and how the pursuit of power, however justified, can exact a cost that nothing can fully compensate for.

Set against a stark, ritual-laden landscape, the story unfolds with a measured, observational clarity. The film treats its characters with restraint, probing the line between devotion, obsession, and the costs of pursuing a path that feels sacred but demands a heavy personal toll. The result is a narrative that lingers, inviting viewers to consider what it truly means to win when the price is measured in loss, and to listen to the way the drum’s pulse can echo both triumph and heartbreak.
