An original Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, directed by Manish Tiwary, relocates the timeless tale to Banaras and its adjoining areas, where violence erupts from a deeply entrenched sand mafia and reverberates through every layer of society. The sand trade is controlled by two influential Banarasi families, the Kashyaps and the Mishras, whose brutal feud drags in politicians, powerbrokers, and a swarming underworld. Vishwanarayan Kashyap Sudhir Pandey uses the pretext of creeping Naxal influence to justify ruthless moves against the Manohar Mishra Sandeep Bose gang, while a wary Minister Surya Pratap Singh pressures both sides to bury their differences for the sake of business and order.
On the Kashyap side, Teetas Ravi Kishan stands as the muscle, commanding a loyal militia that dominates the sand banks and trucking routes that feed markets across the country. He moves within a brittle web of power, including Paro Rajeshwari Sachdev, Kashyap’s second wife, with whom he is entangled in a forbidden affair that intensifies the family’s fragility. The Mishras, led by the older Manohar Mishra Sandeep Bose, strive to protect their name and their business, even as younger kin navigate a treacherous landscape where trust is scarce and danger is constant. Amma Neena Gupta, Bachchi’s devoted caretaker, stands as a quiet witness to the storm, offering a touch of humanity amid the brutality.
Rahul Mishra Prateik Babbar is a striking, good‑looking teenager whose world teeters between swagger and recklessness. He moves in and out of danger with a restless charm and a curiosity that won’t be tamed. Rosa Evelyn Sharma, a foreigner with a free spirit and a history of rebellious acts, becomes a pivotal figure in Rahul’s life, drawing him into experiences that test his loyalties and his conscience. Rahul’s confidant and guide, Baba Makrand Deshpande, offers wary counsel about violence and choices, urging restraint even as the streets demand otherwise.
Banwari Prashant Narayanan, a ruthless Naxal commander, senses a window of opportunity as the feuding clans collide, hoping to seize control of the lucrative sand empire with political protection and armed force. Murari [Amit Sial], a Mishra ally, becomes a casualty in the escalating war, his death a brutal reminder of how quickly loyalties fracture when money and power are at stake. The political layer thickens as Preetam, the minister’s ambitious nephew, moves pieces that threaten to tilt the balance, while Rahul and Bachchi’s bond quietly blooms, defying the rules that once governed their worlds.
Bachchi Amyra Dastur, eighteen and impressionable, wrestles with the pull of love against the pressure of an arranged marriage. Rahul’s feelings deepen as their paths cross during a tense, forbidden flirtation that begins with risk and quickly blooms into something more dangerous and enduring. Bachchi’s longing for authenticity clashes with the steam of social obligation, and Rahul, drawn to her fearlessness and conviction, chooses to pursue the relationship despite the costs.
The romance is tested as the feud spills into every corner of life. Teetas intensifies assaults on Banwari’s turf, triggering a cycle of retaliation where friends fall and the sands themselves seem soaked with anger. The conflict widens when Preetam leverages evidence of Rahul’s past, including a revolver found at a crime scene, to push the city into a full‑scale crackdown. Bachchi’s trust in Rahul becomes a fragile lifeline, a beacon that contrasts with the darkness of the violence sprawling around them.
As the lovers’ defiance grows, the two families collide more violently than ever. A secret wedding is plotted in a haze of fear and defiance, with Banwari’s men pressing their advantage and the police under pressure from higher powers. Rahul refuses to back down, but the price of loyalty weighs heavily on both sides. When a chain of betrayals and misread signals culminates, tragedy erupts in a blaze of gunfire and shattered promises: Murari falls, Teetas is killed, and Rahul’s own sense of justice drives him toward a fatal choice he cannot reverse.
In the aftermath, Bachchi confronts the reality of loss, and Paro’s warnings echo as the city trembles. Rahul, believing Bachchi to be lost, ends his life, a decision that triggers Bachchi’s final act of heartbreak: she awakens from a carefully staged vigil, realizes Rahul is gone, and takes her own life as well. The tale ends with an irreversible silence, a stark echo of love undone by feud, power, and the inescapable pull of fate—Issaq.
