Instinct Reviews & Ratings
Our Echo Score gives it 75/100, strongest in character & emotion (90) and weakest in rewatch factor (55).
Instinct Echo Score Breakdown
Instinct presents a provocative examination of consent through a stylized psychodrama that leans heavily on strong central performances and visual composition. Critics largely commend the film’s daring narrative and meticulous direction, while a minority cite structural unevenness and limited emotional resonance. Audience reactions echo this split, noting the film’s intellectual ambition but questioning its lasting impact. The net effect is a film that intrigues more than it entertains on repeat viewings.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 80
In terms of direction and craft, Instinct demonstrates a confident visual style, with measured camera work that foregrounds subtle facial cues. The cinematography’s understated palette and deliberate framing support the film’s thematic focus, while the editing maintains a restrained rhythm that avoids overt sensationalism. Overall, the technical execution is competent and contributes positively to the film’s atmospheric tone.
- Character & Emotion 90
When evaluating character and emotion, the film’s core strength lies in Carice van Houten’s nuanced portrayal, delivering depth and internal conflict without explicit exposition. Supporting performances provide adequate contrast, though some interactions feel under‑developed. The emotional resonance centers on the therapist‑patient dynamic, achieving a compelling, if uneven, affective core.
- Story & Flow 70
The narrative tackles a contentious psychodrama, refusing to oversimplify gender dynamics and instead presenting ambiguous moral terrain. Plot progression is deliberately measured, fostering intellectual engagement, yet occasional pacing lulls and opaque motivations generate confusion. While the story’s ambition is evident, its execution yields a mixed balance between intrigue and occasional incoherence.
- Sensory Experience 78
In sensory terms, the film employs a restrained sound design that accentuates psychological tension, while the score underscores moments of unease without overwhelming the scene. Visual composition relies on subdued lighting and composed framing, creating a hypnotic ambience that aligns with the protagonist’s internal state. The sensory choices effectively reinforce the film’s thematic concerns.
- Rewatch Factor 55
Rewatch potential appears limited, as critics note an ambivalence toward viewing the film again despite its intellectual provocations. The demanding narrative structure and occasional emotional disengagement reduce the desire for repeat exposure. While some find the thematic depth compelling enough to revisit, the overall consensus suggests the film is more effective as a singular, thought‑provoking experience rather than a recurrent viewing choice.

Spoilers ahead
Nicoline, a single woman and a renowned prison therapist who is between jobs and not interested in full-time employment, begins a new assignment at a prison hospital, taking over the caseload of a previous counsellor who resigned. There she meets Idris, a charismatic convict with a history of sexual violence who is on the cusp of unsupervised parole. Most of the staff feel comfortable with Idris’s behavior and are confident enough to grant him unsupervised leave on a trial basis, while Nicoline remains wary, sensing something unsettling in his charm and the way he can read people. The contrast between professional confidence and moral unease sets the tone for what follows.
