The film opens in 1953, showcasing a young Elise Rainier as she navigates her childhood in New Mexico with her mother, Audrey, brother Christian, and father Gerald. Gerald’s job as an executioner in a prison sets a dark tone for their lives. On a fateful night, shortly after a prisoner’s execution via electric chair, Elise starts perceiving supernatural occurrences, such as knowing intimate details about the executed prisoner. During their nightly chat, Audrey comforts Elise, suggesting she can always confide in her despite Gerald’s fears over Elise’s remarkable gift.

As they settle down for the night, Audrey gifts Christian a whistle, assuring him of her protection whenever he uses it. However, the atmosphere becomes sinister when Elise encounters an entity in their room, leading to a terrifying confrontation that attracts Gerald’s anger and results in him locking Elise in the basement. Here, she is lured by a demon known as Keyface, who attempts to possess her, shaking the house violently. Audrey comes to check on Elise but tragically, she is strangled by a wire, leaving Gerald horrified upon discovering her lifeless body, intensifying Elise’s trauma.

Years later, Elise, now a paranormal investigator, works alongside her colleagues Specs and Tucker, fielding calls from clients seeking help. An urgent call from Ted Garza, who is experiencing paranormal disturbances in Elise’s childhood home, rekindles her old traumas. Despite her apprehensions, she decides to confront her past and assist Garza.

Upon arrival in New Mexico, Elise learns of the haunting activity centered in her former bedroom, which Ted has blocked off. That night, armed with a night-vision camera, she explores the home and discovers Christian’s long-lost whistle hidden under the bed. A chilling encounter with a mysterious female ghost, who steals the whistle and utters “help her,” reveals a connection to her traumatic childhood. Flashbacks illustrate Elise’s past experiences, including a horrifying moment where she pleads with Gerald not to harm her.

As the story unfolds, Elise meets Ted’s family, including Christian and his daughters, who blame her for abandoning them years ago. This emotional turmoil is complicated when Elise learns her nieces are in peril due to Keyface’s malevolent influence. She vows to rescue them, prompting her niece Imogene to confess her own ability to see spirits.

Together with her colleagues, Elise sets out to uncover the truth behind the hauntings, leading to a climactic journey into The Further. As they dig deeper, they discover Anna, the ghost whose tragic past ties back to Elise’s father, Gerald. This horrifying retelling reveals the dark legacy of violence and abuse that haunts their family.

When Elise confronts Keyface, she faces the darkest memories of her childhood and discovers the key to breaking free—her own strength and forgiveness. In a compelling conclusion, Elise rescues her niece Melissa and reconciles with Christian, offering him the symbolic whistle as a gesture of peace.

The film draws to a close as Elise, after assisting in Melissa’s recovery, receives a mysterious call regarding a new case, hinting at the ongoing battle against evil forces that she has yet to confront.
