Caroline, played by Kate Hudson, is a young hospice worker grappling with her role in a field that constantly reminds her of her personal losses. Haunted by the memory of her father, who passed away alone while she was busy touring with a rock band, Caroline experiences a profound sense of guilt. Determined to make a positive impact, she seeks to forge meaningful connections with her patients. However, her disillusionment deepens when she encounters yet another death, where no family members show any concern for the deceased’s belongings.

Everything escalates when Caroline stumbles upon boxes filled with items belonging to recently departed patients, carelessly discarded in a dumpster. Disheartened and fed up, she decides to quit her job at the hospice and looks for a new opportunity as a personal care assistant. That’s when she gets in touch with a lawyer named Luke, who arranges an interview for her with a family in need of assistance.

This brings her to a hauntingly beautiful, secluded mansion in New Orleans, where she is set to care for Ben Devereaux, portrayed by John Hurt, who has suffered a mysterious affliction resembling a stroke. His wife, Violet, played by Gena Rowlands, is immediately skeptical of Caroline’s presence in their home. Yet, encouraged by Luke, she takes the plunge and moves into the eerie mansion.

As she makes her way to the Devereaux estate, Caroline stops at a peculiar gas station, revealing her first peek into the deeply unsettling atmosphere that surrounds her new life. The station’s proprietors display strange objects, including animal bones, which sets the tone for the bizarre events that will unfold.

Caroline soon discovers that all the mirrors in the mansion have been inexplicably removed at Violet’s insistence. Armed with a “skeleton key” that unlocks most doors, she quickly becomes intrigued by a mysterious locked room in the attic, where she suspects Ben’s stroke may have occurred. As she tends to Ben, it becomes clear that he is not merely incapacitated; he seems desperate to communicate with her.

One night, as Caroline attends to Ben, she shocks him out of his stupor when finding him precariously perched on a rooftop. Her heart sinks when she discovers a bedsheet with the desperate message “Help Me” written in soil. When she tries to persuade Violet to seek medical help for Ben, her pleas fall on deaf ears.

Exploring further, Caroline gains access to the locked attic room, confronting a chilling collection of items intended for some kind of dark magic. Her friend and former roommate, Jill, sheds light on these customs, informing her that the folk practices in question are known as Hoodoo, which only holds power over those who believe. Caroline finds this knowledge both compelling and terrifying.

As Caroline’s fascination deepens, she uncovers a vinyl record titled “The Conjure of Sacrifice,” which seems to play a significant role in the unfolding drama. Following a tense encounter with Violet, who drops a bombshell about the mansion’s haunting history involving two murdered former servants steeped in Hoodoo, Caroline becomes determined to break Ben’s chains.

Attempting to protect Ben, Caroline realizes the urgency of her mission to save him from what appears to be Violet’s sinister manipulation. When her plans unravel, she finds herself in a deadly confrontation with Violet, leading to a series of harrowing events inside the house that culminate in a desperate battle between light and dark.

When Caroline attempts to seal herself off with a circle of protection, she discovers the true horror of her circumstances—a body swap ritual involving violent and tragic histories. As the spirits of the lynched servants take control, Caroline is led down a path from which escape may prove fatal.

The climax sees Caroline struggling for her life as she realizes that she has become part of an ancient ritual, leaving her to contend not just with Violet but with the dark forces that have been at play all along. The film leaves us with a chilling exploration of power, manipulation, and the haunting question of identity, as Caroline ultimately finds her fate intertwined with those who have long since passed away. Stripped of her voice and forced into a puppet’s role in a cruel game, her final glimpse at hope lies in a desperate call for help, which may come too late to save her.
