Hugo Nicolas Fagerberg Winter, an American smuggler, buys kilos of hashish in India and is offered a sample of a rare Ugandan herb called Bulu, rumored to grant prophecy. In a trance inspired by Bulu, Hugo experiences a startling vision of himself back in Uganda. When things go badly for him in India, he flees to London to his family, only to discover he is deeply in debt to dangerous gangsters. With the clock ticking and money slipping away, he resolves to chase the prophecy and travels to Africa to locate more of this life-changing drug to salvage his fortune.

In Uganda, Hugo’s visions lead him to Kisakye Esther Tebandeke Gloria, a devout and resilient farmer who has unexpectedly inherited the village shaman’s role after her father’s death. The elder kept Bulu to protect the community, but since his passing, her ancestral land has been grabbed by a local pastor, Isaac. Kisakye remains wary of Bulu, dismissing it as Satanic, yet the lure of money tempts her to work with Hugo to sell the drug abroad. Kisakye’s sister, Angela Rehema Nanfuka Mbira, is entangled with a criminal gang and also sees Bulu as a way to profit, viewing Hugo as both opportunity and threat.

After a tense confrontation with the criminal gang, Hugo and Kisakye press deeper into Uganda’s wild hinterlands, arriving at the remote village of Makaana where Kisakye cultivates Bulu in secret. Hugo begins to win wary trust by performing as a seer; in a Bulu vision, he foresees and saves the drowning of a local boy, earning him a measure of respect from the villagers. But Pastor Isaac grows bitter, accusing Hugo and Kisakye of sowing division and greed within the community. Kisakye stays principled, though she struggles with the consequences of becoming a dealer and the burden of her new role.

Meanwhile, Angela’s impatience to strike a deal with Hugo intensifies as he receives troubling news from London: his family has been attacked, forcing him to consider abandoning the project and returning home. The pressure from multiple directions strains the fragile alliance between Hugo and Kisakye, while the siblings’ conflicting ambitions pull Angela deeper into a dangerous world.

Hugo’s attempt to coerce Kisakye into handing back her Bulu backfires, and she pushes him away, leaving him with only a single hit to carry. On the return journey, Hugo experiences a grim vision of Kisakye being assaulted by Isaac; driven by both love and fear, he turns back to rescue her. In the ensuing melee, the pastor is killed, tipping the balance of power in the village.

Chaos intensifies as Angela steals Kisakye’s remaining Bulu and flees into the forest, pursued by Hugo. The chase ends when Hugo finally catches up with Angela; she is killed in a violent struggle. Wounded and lost, Hugo consumes a very large amount of Bulu in a desperate bid to find his way out, but the overdose drives him into the shadow world of Bulu spirits and leaves him brain-dead. Kisakye finds his comatose body and takes the money he had saved to buy more Bulu, a stark reminder of how ambition, belief, and survival can collide in dangerous, life-altering ways.
