In the serene suburbs of late 1970s America, Jean (Rachel Brosnahan), a devoted homemaker, has settled into her life alongside her husband Eddie (Bill Heck), a cunning thief. Although the couple has accepted their struggle to conceive or adopt children, Jean finds comfort in her predictable routine. However, her life is upended when Eddie surprises her with a baby boy named Harry—a gift that throws her into the chaotic world of motherhood. With the assistance of Cal (Arinzé Kene), an enigmatic associate of Eddie’s business partner Jimmy, Jean’s joy quickly turns to turmoil as she realizes her husband has mysteriously vanished.

The fallout from Eddie’s disappearance strikes hard when Jimmy pays Jean a nocturnal visit, delivering a bag of cash and instructing her to flee for her safety. With Cal’s help, Jean relocates to a remote suburban home, where she is warned against forming any significant ties with her new neighbors. Days drag on, and the weight of isolation begins to take its toll on Jean, yet her instinctive maternal nature compels her to connect with Evelyn (Marceline Hugot), a widowed neighbor.
