What's After the Movie
Daniel Johnson Jr. (born 5 June 1944) is a Canadian politician and lawyer best known for his brief tenure as the 25th Premier of Quebec in 1994. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he is the son of Daniel Johnson Sr., the influential Quebec premier who led the Union Nationale party. Johnson Jr. pursued law at the Université de Montréal, earning his licence en droit before entering public life. He first gained prominence as a member of the federal House of Commons, representing the riding of Louis‑Harper from 1979 to 1984, where he served under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce, and later as Minister of the Environment. After leaving federal politics, he returned to Quebec's provincial arena, winning a seat in the National Assembly for the riding of Saint‑Louis in 1994. Following the resignation of Premier Robert Bourassa, Johnson was selected by the Quebec Liberal Party to lead the government, becoming premier on 12 January 1994. His administration lasted only five months, ending after the Parti Québécois won the June 1994 election, but his time in office was marked by attempts to balance economic growth with Quebec’s distinct cultural identity. After his premiership, he continued to serve as Leader of the Opposition until 1998, and later chaired several corporate boards, including the Quebec Investment Fund and the Toronto‑based Sun Life Financial. He is also a prolific writer, contributing op‑ed pieces on federalism and public policy. Johnson remains an influential voice in Canadian politics, frequently appearing as a commentator on television and in print media.
