In the tranquil expanse of Connecticut’s beautiful Litchfield County, where the Housatonic River flows serenely, a celebrated short story author, Jennifer Hills, seeks seclusion in a cottage near Manhattan to find inspiration for her first novel. This peaceful retreat is disrupted by the presence of the charming gas station manager, Johnny Stillman, and two idle locals, Stanley Woods and Andy Chirensky, who become inexplicably fascinated by Jennifer’s every move.

Across the way is Matthew Duncan, a kind-hearted man dealing with mild mental challenges, who becomes both Jennifer’s neighbor and grocery delivery person. His innocent admiration for Jennifer is echoed by his friends, who share exaggerated tales of her beauty, including whispers of an accidental sighting of her. Emboldened by their crude impulse, Stanley and Andy engage in a sinister stalking of Jennifer, maneuvering their boat near her cottage under the cover of night.
