An American Chris Smith wakes up in an English hospital with no memory of his life before a recent car accident.
Four months pass, and while his body has healed, the memory gap remains. A cautious psychiatrist, Dr. Keller, explains that an anonymous benefactor is footing his bills and has provided a furnished apartment, though he warns that the amnesia may bring troubling hallucinations.
The only tangible link to his past is a torn newspaper photograph, and it leads him toward someone new and intimate: Gina McConnell, his nurse, with whom he begins to fall in love.
After leaving the hospital, he hires a private investigator, Hemmings, to help uncover his history. He also visits the photographer who produced the photo, who reveals that the person pictured is dead, a victim of a violent shower murder.
Back in his flat, Chris starts to hear voices from next door—a couple arguing—but the real ache is a recurring image of a woman who resembles the photograph, paired with the shocking discovery of a bloody knife in his shower.
Denise, Denise James, a woman who claims to be the widow of the man responsible for the accident, appears and bears a striking resemblance to the woman in the photo. She moves between charm and menace, and she repeatedly plies Chris with drugs, deepening the fog around his memories.
One late-night episode culminates in the unsettling sight of the body of a murdered woman in his shower, a corpse that later seems to vanish as if erased by the night itself.
With Hemmings’s steady support, Chris pieces together enough to see through the manipulation: Denise and Keller have plotted to frame him for murder, using the dead physician’s wife as the target. In the end, the truth surfaces, and Chris is finally reunited with Gina.
