Oliver Wyatt lives with his mother, Hannah Wyatt and her live-in boyfriend, Frank Donally, while he spends occasional afternoons with his father, Martyn Wyatt. After Oliver suffers a string of mysterious injuries, he hints they might come from neighborhood bullies, but his doctor father grows wary that something more troubling could be happening at home.

Suspicions sharpen as Martyn believes the injuries are caused by Frank Donally, yet Oliver keeps silent and Hannah refuses to accept that Frank could hurt her son. The tension spills into a custody battle, with Martyn seeking sole custody. In a controversial move, Hannah’s lawyer cites Martyn’s gay relationship with Tom Dixon as evidence of the unsuitability of his home, further souring the dynamics between the adults.
