Margaret Hall and her family lead an upper-middle-class life in Lake Tahoe, California, with Margaret personally running the household, caring for three children and her elderly father-in-law, while her Navy pilot husband is away aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. She balances the demands of a busy home life with the quiet pressures of living in a community that values appearances, all while keeping a steady hand on the reins of a family that relies on her.
One day, she confronts a troubling truth: her son Beau, a high school senior, has been having an affair with a 30-year-old Reno nightclub owner, Darby Reese. Determined to protect her son, she goes to Reese’s club, The Deep End, to demand that he stay away from Beau. Reese, uncooperative and provocative, tries to extract money from her, demanding $5,000. That night, a drunken Reese secretly visits Beau and the two men meet in the boathouse. What begins as a heated confrontation over the affair quickly escalates into a physical altercation; Beau confronts him about asking his mother for money, and the two end up fighting. As Beau walks back to the house, Reese leans on a railing, which collapses beneath him, sending him into the water and leaving him impaled on an anchor.
The next morning, a stunned Margaret discovers Reese’s body on the beach and makes the split-second decision to hide it in order to protect Beau. She moves the body and dumps it in a secluded cove, hoping to conceal the crime. But the discovery of the body triggers a police investigation that frames it as homicide, pulling the Halls into a dangerous public scrutiny they had hoped to avoid.
Shortly after, Alek Spera arrives with a confrontational threat: he has a tape of Darby and Beau engaging in sex, and he demands $50,000 within 24 hours or he will turn the tape over to the police, which would cast Beau as a suspect. To come up with the money, Margaret hatches a desperate plan, visiting the bank and pawning jewelry in an attempt to raise funds. Despite her efforts, she cannot come up with the full amount. Alek calls again, indicating that she needs only $25,000, but his partner Nagle is convinced that she’s lying and that the money is not forthcoming.
The tension escalates when Nagle corners and beats Margaret, but Alek intervenes, and the two men struggle. In the ensuing confrontation, Alek strangles Nagle, and Margaret tries to take responsibility for Nagle’s death, but Alek ultimately takes the body away in Nagle’s car. As Margaret and Beau drive in search of Nagle’s car, they spot it overturned in a ditch. Margaret tries to help Alek, who is critically injured, but he pleads with her to leave before the police arrive. She stays by him until he dies, a moment that weighs heavily on her conscience and alters the course of the family’s life.
Back at home, Margaret is left in a fragile state of distress, yet Beau offers quiet support as the absent husband’s phone call comes through, answered by Beau’s sister. In the end, the Halls drift back toward their normal life, attempting to regain a sense of stability after a series of harrowing choices and a crisis that tested the very foundations of their family.
