Priam Farrel is celebrated as England’s most illustrious painter, yet he lives as a reclusive figure who recoils from fame. Having spent years away from his homeland, he keeps a distance from the public eye, and even his longtime agent has never laid eyes on him. A case of mistaken belief kickstarts a strange chain of events: when Lady Helen unexpectedly assumes that he has proposed, Priam hastily returns to London with his loyal valet, Henry Leek. The tale takes a dark turn when Leek dies soon afterward of pneumonia, and the attending physician, misreading the situation, declares the famous painter dead to the world. The real Priam finds a peculiar comfort in being mistaken for his valet by virtually everyone, including his cousin Duncan, who hasn’t seen him since his early childhood. After a few failed attempts to correct the record, Priam resigns himself to the illusion.
Seeking refuge in a hotel, he encounters Alice Chalice, who was connected to Leek through a matrimonial newspaper and was slated to meet Leek for the first time in that moment. Leek had sent her a photograph showing him with Priam, so she repeats the same mistaken identity with easy charm. Priam is drawn to her warmth, but he hesitates when he learns that the honor of being buried in Westminster Abbey could be bestowed upon “him,” and he cannot persuade anyone—nor Alice—that he is the painter.
A quiet life with Alice seems within reach, and Priam imagines a peaceful country existence. Yet trouble resurfaces when Alice’s brewery income—and the business itself—vanishes. Priam assures her that he can compensate by selling some of his recent canvases, but Alice remains wary. She consents to sell a few paintings, chiefly for their frames, and one work travels through a web of hands until it lands with Oxford, Priam’s former agent, who instantly recognizes the painter’s distinctive style. Oxford purchases all of Priam’s new works, then resells them, presenting assurances of authenticity for every Farrel in circulation.
Driven by a desire to expose that he is alive, Oxford pressures Priam to reveal his true identity. The mystery deepens when a backdated painting—dated 1932, two years after the painter’s supposed death—lands its buyer in legal trouble with Oxford. Priam refusес to disclose, prompting Oxford to pivot: a public advertisement seeks information about Henry Leek.
Leek’s widow arrives, accompanied by her two clergyman sons, John and Henry, who recount that her husband abandoned them decades earlier after the birth of their twins. She identifies Priam as the missing man, and Priam bolts again in a panic. Alice steps forward, portraying her “Henry” as a violent and unstable figure who would invite scandal, and the Leeks depart in haste.
The tension lands in a courtroom, where testimony unfolds. Duncan recalls a distinguishing physical mark—a pair of moles on Priam’s neck—yet Priam resists showing them. Alice ultimately persuades him to reveal the moles, and the couple then chooses to sail away together, determined to reclaim their privacy and craft a life free from the labels that have pursued them.
In the end, the film threads together themes of art, identity, and the elusive nature of truth, painting Priam’s journey as a delicate balance between fame and solitude, illusion and reality, and the enduring bond between two people who find each other amidst a maelstrom of mistaken identities.
