Esther Blueburger, Danielle Catanzariti, is a 13-year-old Jewish outcast at her posh private school. At home, her controlling mother, Grace Blueburger, Essie Davis, pressures Esther to conform, while her twin brother begins to drift toward troubling behavior. She finds solace in a duck named Normal, a unusual but loyal friend in a world that feels harsh and judgmental.

“get me out of here”

After escaping her own Bat Mitzvah, Esther bumps into Sunni, Keisha Castle-Hughes, a rebellious girl from the local public school, whom she had observed and spoken to on previous occasions. The two form a tentative friendship, and Esther starts attending Sunni’s school secretly, under the guise of a Swedish exchange student. She grows to appreciate the public school’s easiergoing vibe and enjoys spending time with Sunni’s friends and Sunni’s laid-back single mother, Mary, Toni Collette, who works as a stripper. As Esther gains popularity and yields to peer pressure—including an incident where she attacks a girl from her old school—her friendship with Sunni begins to fray.

Back at her old school, her classmates are led to believe she was chosen for an elite social experiment, and when she returns she is treated like royalty. Esther later discovers that Mary has died in a motorcycle accident, and a grieving Sunni is transferred to Esther’s private school under the care of Sunni’s grandmother, Lyn Pike. Ultimately, Esther decides that being true to herself is more important than fitting in, and she renews her friendship with Sunni.
