Helen of Troy 1956

This film reimagines the Trojan War set around 1100 B.C., offering a narrative that diverges from the Iliad in several notable ways. Paris [Jacques Sernas] sails from Troy to Sparta to seek a peace treaty between two powerful city-states, but a violent storm drives his ship back to the shores of Sparta. There he is found by Helen [Rossana Podestà], the queen of Sparta, and the two soon fall into a dangerous and magnetic romance.

He goes to the palace where he encounters Helen’s husband, king Menelaus [Niall MacGinnis], alongside Agamemnon [Robert Douglas], Odysseus [Torin Thatcher], Achilles [Stanley Baker], and many other Greek rulers as they debate whether to march to war against Troy. Menelaus, feeling betrayed by Helen, pretends to be his friend while quietly plotting Paris’s death.

Warned by Helen, Paris flees and, after they are nearly caught by the Spartans, carries Helen with him back to Troy. Back on Trojan soil, the Greeks rally in support of their cause, and the siege of Troy begins in earnest. The conflict is brutal and protracted, with the Trojans blaming their suffering on Paris and Helen, even as it becomes clear that the Greeks are primarily after Troy’s riches rather than a mere personal grievance involving Helen.

The siege ends with Greek victory thanks to the cunning ruse of the Trojan Horse. As Paris and Helen attempt to escape, they are cornered by Menelaus. Paris confronts the Spartan king in single combat, but just as he seems to gain the upper hand, he is stabbed from behind, denying him a fair trial by arms. Helen is compelled to return with Menelaus, but she remains serene, convinced that death will reunite her with Paris in Elysium.
