Irénée Fabre grows up in the village, living and working in the tiny grocery shop run by his childless uncle who raised him, and he nourishes a vivid dream of becoming a famous and wealthy film actor with an exotic car to show for it. When a film crew rolls into town, he seizes on the chance to showcase his hidden talents, hoping they’ll see a star in the making. The crew humor him, calling him the “village idiot” or schpountz, and even entertain him with a fake contract that flatters his vanity. His uncle, Uncle Baptiste Fabre, ridicules his naivety, while the warm-hearted Françoise, a member of the team, warns him not to take it seriously.

Undeterred, Irénée cashes out his savings and boards a train to Paris, pressing his way toward the studio gates, only to be turned away again and again. In a twist of mercy, Françoise helps him find a foothold, getting him a job as a props assistant rather than a star, and he begins to learn the rhythms of film-making from the crew and the sets.

Yet the same pranksters who lured him in turn unleash another ruse, pushing him into a scene that sabotages a pompous actor, Galubert under an even more pompous director. Sent to the set as part of the practical joke, Irénée initially stumbles through chaos, but the mishaps reveal a different kind of charm: his improvisational silliness and timing turn out to be unexpectedly funny, and the crew—along with some audience members—recognize the appeal of his comic instincts rather than his solemn desire for grandeur. Before long, Irénée is offered a real acting part, and the studio head lays out a genuine contract, paired with a tangible symbol of success—a Peugeot 601 Éclipse convertible.

Buoyed by this sudden ascent, he proposes to Françoise, and the two marry. The couple travels back to the uncle’s village, where Irénée, in the clothes he wore when he first arrived, walks into the shop and tells his uncle that the dream of fame has not completely vanished—he asks to come home again, leaving the door open for a different life. The uncle, initially delighted at the prospect of reintegrating another worker into the shop, is soon shown the truth when Irénée points to the car parked outside: the new wealth is real, and with it comes a changed future for both of them. The story blends humor with a quiet exploration of ambition, talent, and the surprising ways success can arrive when least expected.
