Hatching Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave Hatching 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 75 on Metacritic, and IMDb users rate it 6.2/10. Our Echo Score gives it 72/100, strongest in sensory experience (80) and weakest in story & flow (65).
Hatching Echo Score Breakdown
Hatching presents a visually striking body‑horror fable that largely succeeds through its atmospheric craft and thematic ambition, though its narrative cohesion and character depth falter at times. Critics commend the precise direction, striking cinematography, and strong lead performance, while some note uneven pacing and underdeveloped ideas. User feedback mirrors this split, praising the fresh concept and unsettling tone but criticizing repetitive moments and a rushed conclusion. The film therefore offers a solid, if imperfect, entry in contemporary horror.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 78
The film’s visual and technical execution stands out as a primary strength. Critics highlight precise jump scares, meticulous lighting, and sharp editing that reinforce the unsettling atmosphere. Users echo this view, describing the aesthetic as eerie, atmospheric, and beautifully crafted. Some mention occasional unevenness in execution, but the overall craftsmanship remains high. Consequently, the artistic components of Hatching are judged to be notably effective.
- Character & Emotion 70
Acting and character dynamics receive mixed but generally favorable remarks. Reviewers praise the lead child’s performance and the protagonist’s emotional resonance, noting a compelling portrayal of a strained mother‑daughter bond. Conversely, certain critics and users find the creature‑child relationship shallow and the mother’s characterization over‑exaggerated. While depth varies across characters, the overall acting competence supports a respectable, if not exemplary, character score.
- Story & Flow 65
The narrative blends fable‑like allegory with body‑horror, offering originality but uneven pacing. Critics commend the film’s thematic ambition and efficient storytelling, yet some point to scattered plotting and underdeveloped sub‑plots. User commentary similarly notes a promising premise that becomes repetitive and concludes abruptly. The story’s inventive core is offset by structural weaknesses, resulting in a moderate overall assessment.
- Sensory Experience 80
Sensory elements—sound design, music, and visual style—are consistently highlighted as strong points. Critics describe the atmospherics as clammy and the creature design as uniquely grotesque, enhancing tension. Viewers appreciate the atmospheric dread and cohesive aesthetic that sustain immersion throughout. Minor criticisms of occasional tonal shifts do not detract from the dominant sensory impact, leading to a high score in this category.
- Rewatch Factor 68
Rewatch value is moderate, reflecting both intrigue and lingering flaws. Critics note the film’s subversive themes and striking visuals that invite repeat viewings, while some comment on its limited lasting impression. Users report sustained investment and a twist that rewards a second look, yet also mention repetitive sections that diminish replay appeal. The balance of memorable moments and narrative shortcomings yields a respectable but not exceptional rewatch factor.
