Scott, a devout Calvinist businessman and single father from Grand Rapids, Michigan, faces a parent’s worst nightmare when his teenage daughter Kristen vanishes during a church-sponsored trip to Bellflower, California. As months slip by with no solid leads, the weight of unanswered questions corrodes his certainty about right and wrong, and the search becomes a mission that tests every pillar of his faith and discipline. In May 1978, a startling break arrives in the form of evidence from Andy Mast, Peter Boyle, a brash private investigator from Los Angeles. Mast presents a chilling 8 mm stag film shot in an L.A. sex shop, showing Kristen engaged in a sexual act with two men. The scene shocks Van Dorn to his core and convinces him, against the advice of many, that his daughter has been kidnapped and coerced into sex work. The shock of that discovery propels him toward a single-minded, impulsive resolve: to rescue Kristen, no matter the cost. Driven by a need for action, Van Dorn heads to Los Angeles, only to find Mast distracted by another case—the pursuit of a porn star rather than the singular problem he was hired to solve. He fires Mast and plunges into a subterranean milieu that clashes violently with his disciplined, Protestant code. He begins to blur lines he once swore he would never cross, adopting a persona as a would-be pornography producer to infiltrate the network that might hold clues about Kristen’s fate. From the seedy corners of adult entertainment to the motel rooms where strangers negotiate secrets, Van Dorn’s search draws in a cast of volatile characters. Among those who answer his appeal is a disheveled actor known as “Jism Jim,” who has his own ties to the stag film and the larger underworld. After a brutal, almost ritualistic interrogation, Jim points Van Dorn toward Niki, a streetwise prostitute who claims to know Kristen’s whereabouts. Though wary, Van Dorn pays Niki to guide him through California’s pornographic circuit, a move that deeply unsettles his sense of right and wrong and forces him to confront how easily he can become complicit in a world he despises. Unbeknownst to him, his brother-in-law Wes, Leonard Gaines, has re-hired Mast to shadow the growing partnership, tightening the net around the search as the stakes rise.

As the trio travels from Los Angeles to San Diego and finally San Francisco, the uneasy alliance gradually yields to a fragile trust. Niki’s street-smart pragmatism and her resistance to being merely an object of the men’s gaze begin to earn Van Dorn’s reluctant respect. In San Francisco, Niki introduces Van Dorn to Tod, a dealer connected to Ratan, a sadistic pornographer rumored to produce snuff films. Van Dorn endures a grim screening in a dimly lit sex shop, viewing a brutal murder that sickens him yet provides a crucial, if horrific, confirmation of the brutality that can surround Kristen’s world. The tension culminates in Van Dorn demanding Tod’s address, while Niki fears abandonment should Kristen be found—fear that pushes her to bend to Van Dorn’s will. A heated confrontation ends with Van Dorn striking Niki, coercing her into revealing Tod’s whereabouts.

Van Dorn and Mast converge on a bondage dungeon where Tod’s address is finally learned, and this leads them to a nightclub hosting live sex shows. There, the hunt reaches its focal point as Van Dorn discovers Ratan and Kristen among a crowded audience, watching performers on stage. Chaos erupts as Ratan attempts to defend himself with a knife, but Mast—whose loyalty to his client has now become a matter of life and death—arrives from across the street and fatally shoots Ratan in the back as chaos erupts in the club. Police and onlookers flood the scene, and Van Dorn finally finds Kristen—safe, but changed. She confesses she fled his stifling upbringing because she felt seen in a world where she could define her own boundaries and choices.

The aftermath is deeply wrenching.
