Happy Easter 1984

Stéphane, Jean-Paul Belmondo, is a suave, successful businessman in Nice whose charm masks a problematic pattern of womanising. At the airport, he has just left his childless wife Sophie Margelle, Marie Laforêt, who is off to visit relatives, and he soon picks up Julie, a teenager with nowhere to sleep. They slip into a restaurant for dinner, and the night continues back at his apartment. Julie’s arrival unsettles more than a few people, especially Sophie, who has paused her own journey due to a strike that halted her plans. In a quick, calculated twist, Stéphane claims that Julie is a secret daughter, a claim meant to quell suspicion and protect his outward respectability. When the understandably wary Sophie asks what would lead Julie to seek out her father in the middle of the night after so many years, Julie asserts that she is pregnant, a statement that stirs Sophie’s lingering maternal instincts into action. She embraces the notion of protecting Julie, even as she convulsively wrestles with the reality of Stéphane’s deception—yet she makes it clear that Julie must tell her mother where she is.

Next day marks Stéphane’s birthday, and Sophie hosts a dinner with his business associates and their wives, along with Rousseau, a burly trade unionist negotiating a deal with Stéphane. Michel Beaune brings to the table a blunt, forceful energy that clashes with Stéphane’s capitalist world, while Julie is fitted with a beautiful dress to present a composed, polished image. Despite his own deep-seated aversion to capitalists, Rousseau becomes oddly taken with Julie, drawn in by her youth and vulnerability. The evening is upended when Julie’s vulgar mother bursts in drunk, intent on reclaiming her daughter. The intrusion shocks everyone, revealing the gulf between Stéphane’s refined persona and the chaotic honesty of the life Julie’s mother embodies. After a tense moment, the mother’s fervor fades into a fog of vodka, and she is promptly taken to bed as the party reels from the reveal. In the morning, Stéphane discovers Julie has slipped away again, this time to a conference where Rousseau is speaking, and he storms in to reclaim what he believes is his daughter.

The masquerade — this uneasy, fragile balance between affection and manipulation — is finally laid bare before Sophie. She listens as Julie and her mother candidly acknowledge the ruse, and the truth settles over the room: the nighttime deception has ended, and Julie and her mother depart with a sense of precarious freedom. The film closes on the uneasy note that even in the glow of a family’s care, complex desires and human imperfections can drive people apart, leaving behind a wake of consequences that neither Stéphane nor Sophie fully anticipated.
