Steve Bancroft, Gary Collins and Lew Price, James Hampton, are two astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle who witness a collision with an unidentified object after a satellite is launched. The object, monitored on radar as it streaks at incredible speeds, positions itself above the shuttle and the impact destroys an astronaut in the launch bay. When Bancroft and Price return to Earth, they are met with stonewalling and disbelief as they try to recount what they saw. At NASA, Deputy Director Harry Forbes, Darren McGavin, bluntly assures them that everything is going to be all right, a line that echoes as a warning about the pressures to keep the incident quiet.

After a controlled landing in the Arizona desert, the damaged alien craft is moved to Wolf Air Force Base in Texas and housed in Hangar 18, where scientists and technicians—led by Forbes—set out to study it. The atmosphere is tense, fueled by an upcoming presidential election that drives officials to sanitize the event and protect national security at any cost. Meanwhile, the Air Force disseminates a public narrative that blames Bancroft and Price for the death of their colleague and for the satellite’s destruction, a story designed to discredit the two men and silence their testimony.

Bancroft and Price, believing they still have a chance to prove the truth, turn to the ship’s telemetry tapes. To their horror, the recordings have been erased. A friend who works at a remote tracking station provides access to authentic telemetry, revealing where the craft actually landed and hinting at a much larger mystery. With permission blocked and officials pressing to bury the story, the two men vow to uncover the full extent of the cover-up.

Inside the hangar, investigators discover that the two alien crew members died in the collision. They determine that a chemical release inside the craft produced a short-lived toxic gas. A human woman found in a stasis chamber wakes up, screaming in fear, underscoring that the encounter involved life forms not yet understood. The team notices symbols on the control panels that resemble those used by ancient Earth civilizations, and a video on the ship’s computer reveals that the aliens have surveilled power plants, military bases, industrial sites, and major cities around the globe. Autopsies suggest a surprising similarity in the evolutionary paths of the aliens and humans, leading a scientist to conclude that the ship could not have reached Earth on its own and must have originated from a much larger, faster, and long-ranged mother ship.

As Bancroft and Price press forward, they become prime targets for government operatives who want to keep Hangar 18’s existence a secret. A tense pursuit follows, filled with high-speed maneuvers and near misses, and a fatal clash ends when one of the pursuing agents is killed during a night-time chase. The couple’s escape crumbles when the brakes on their rental car fail, sending them into a dangerous crash that ends at a gas refinery. They evade further attempts on their lives by sprinting into action on an oil tanker; Price climbs onto the tanker, releases some fuel, lights an emergency flare, and tosses it, triggering a fiery wreck that kills the pursuing agents but costs Price his life.

News of Price’s death intensifies the pressure on Forbes and Bancroft. Forbes demands that Bancroft be brought to Hangar 18 to face the truth, or he will go to the press with everything they’ve learned. In response, officials decide to remotely fly an explosives-filled plane into Hangar 18 to wipe out any remaining evidence. The investigators determine that the aliens have reportedly visited Earth before and that humans may be their descendants. Further examination of the footage reveals that the sites seen in the surveillance videos are “designated landing areas,” suggesting that the aliens intend to return.

Bancroft finally reaches the base in a bold break-in, driving through the security gate and seeking refuge in a warehouse before being discovered by Forbes. Forbes escorts him back to Hangar 18 where the alien craft sits, and just as a researcher reveals a translation indicating the aliens are poised to return, a plane crashes into Hangar 18, causing a massive explosion.

The following day, a news report proclaims that Bancroft, Forbes, and their team have survived the blast, shielded inside the alien spacecraft. In the aftermath, Forbes schedules a public press conference to reveal the truth, setting the stage for a confrontation between secrecy and revelation that could alter humanity’s understanding of its origins and its future. The film closes with the sense that the alien presence remains a looming question, one that may soon reappear in a more overt form as the world decides how to respond to the possibility of intelligent visitors who may already have shaped the course of human history.
