On the way to the seaside resort of Brighthaven, Richard Rollinson, John Bentley, finds himself sharing a carriage with Susan Lancaster, [Patricia Dainton], who is travelling to join her uncle on holiday and has just been handed a mysterious package. The mood shatters when a volley of bullets shatters the window, turning a calm journey into immediate danger. Susan explains that her uncle has developed a secret formula that has drawn the wrong kind of attention, and threats have intensified, prompting their hurried escape toward Brighthaven.
Before long, Rollinson overhears a pair of shady characters discussing how to kidnap Susan, heightening the sense that someone is cracking down on them. The situation grows more urgent when Susan reveals that the uncle’s discovery has attracted broader interest, making their safety even more precarious. With danger closing in, Rollinson seeks guidance from his old colleague Inspector Grice, Valentine Dyall, of Scotland Yard, who suggests that the evidence is leaning toward a specific man as the culprit behind the abduction.
Determined to uncover the truth, Rollinson uses his East End connections to dig deeper while Susan is kidnapped and bound, a tense thread running through the investigation. As the net tightens, Rollinson narrows the field and identifies not just the criminals but their elusive leader, the figure known as The Hammer. In a decisive turn, he frees Susan and exposes the real culprit, proving that the man the police had suspected is, in fact, innocent.
The pursuit blends street-smarts with methodical inquiry, gradually revealing the scheme behind the threat to the formula and the people willing to go to extreme lengths to seize it. In the end, what began as a perilous ride on a train becomes a careful unraveling of a conspiracy, a near-miss rescue, and a correction of a mistaken accusation, all centered on the bond between Rollinson and Susan as they race to safety.
