In this Arizona-set tale that follows the events of Gunsmoke: The Last Apache, the story unfolds in the latter half of the Pleasant Valley War (1882–1892), a brutal feud that pits the Tewksbury and Graham clans against a backdrop of vigilante ranchers, cowboys, sheepmen, gunmen, lawmen, and innocent civilians whose lives intertwine and collide over a decade.
Matt Dillon is a cattle rancher in the Dragoon Mountains northeast of Tombstone, living with his daughter Beth Dillon. Beth’s mother, known as Mike, has just died, a backstory touched on in the preceding saga of Matt’s Love Story. After the funeral, a brutal confrontation with Tommy Graham leaves Matt beaten, and Tommy retaliates by murdering Charlie Tewksbury and rustling Matt’s cattle for revenge.
Against Beth’s objections, Matt sends Beth on a train to Philadelphia to honor Mike’s wish that she pursue a college education. Yet the move hardly eases the tension, as Matt tracks Tommy’s gang north toward the Tonto Basin, the region south of Payson where the early roots of the Pleasant Valley War were planted. Along this rough trek, Matt crosses paths with an old acquaintance, Col. Tucker, who has risen to leadership of a vigilante faction known as the Committee of 50, a group that conducts lynchings of those deemed rustlers or undesirables. The moral climate turns increasingly volatile as Matt witnesses the consequences of vigilante justice and the erosion of due process.
In a tense turn, Matt shoots three men he believes are innocent from a tree and brings their bodies to Payson to report the murders to Sheriff Abel Rose, a moment that underscores how quickly suspicion and violence spiral within this frontier conflict. The journey north and the actions taken along the way reveal a world where loyalty is tested, survival is costly, and the line between law and extrajudicial action blurs under the pressure of a long-standing feud.
Meanwhile, Beth abandons the train’s path to find her father, setting off on a precarious search that mirrors the broader chaos of the war. Will McCall, a ranch hand, becomes entwined in the escalating range war alongside Beth, pulling them both deeper into the dangerous currents that define this tumultuous chapter in the frontier saga. The film uses stark landscapes, factional conflict, and personal stakes to portray a story of vengeance, duty, and the heavy cost of living in a land where feuds endure and the pursuit of justice is forever contested.
