In April 1985 the narrator begins shooting a film with friend Kamioka as the lead, but after three months the project stalls and he works alone. A stillborn rabbit buried under a garden tree reminds him of Kamioka’s late father, prompting a journey. In Hokuriku he meets a woman from an earlier film; on a train to Tokyo she appears in his dream, promising an exit.
