Golden Voices 2019

For decades, husband and wife Victor and Raya Frenkel, portrayed by Vladimir Fridman and Maria Belkin, achieved acclaim as prominent voice-over and dubbing actors in the Soviet Union, known for lending their voices to major Western Hollywood films intended for Soviet audiences. However, with the collapse of the USSR in 1990, this beloved couple made the pivotal decision to make aliyah, joining the influx of hundreds of thousands of other Jewish immigrants in their journey to Israel.

Upon their arrival in Tel Aviv, they are immediately confronted with the stark, often painful reality of cultural dislocation. To their dismay, they discover that there is little to no demand for Russian-language dubbing artists in their new environment. As they struggle to secure income and maintain their sense of dignity, the couple’s professional lives begin to diverge significantly, which adds strain to their already fragile marriage.

In an attempt to support herself discreetly, Raya takes up a job as a telephone sex operator for a local agency managed by her new employer, Dvora Evelin Hagoel. Utilizing her honed vocal skills, Raya finds unexpected financial success but keeps the true nature of her work hidden from her proud husband, Victor. Meanwhile, in his quest to adapt, Victor grapples with the harsh new reality and eventually finds work with local bootleggers and video pirates. He uses his dubbing talent to create illegal VHS tapes of classic European arthouse and Hollywood films for the local Russian-speaking black market.

As the couple navigates their secretive jobs and attempts to redefine their identities amidst the geopolitical upheaval of the early 1990s, their surreal yet painful experiences compel them to confront whether their shared love of cinema can help mend their fractured relationship. Tensions escalate as the Gulf War ramps up, with Scud missile alerts forcing the populace into sealed rooms equipped with gas masks, leading to an increasing emotional and physical distance between them.

The tension reaches a climax when Raya’s secret is ultimately uncovered by Victor, which leads them to face the disheartening realities of their transformed lives. In the wake of this revelation, they come to terms with the fact that recapturing their past glories in the Soviet Union may be impossible. However, through their enduring connection to cinema and voice work, they find a fragile reconciliation and acceptance of their new roles within the ever-evolving cultural landscape of Israel.
