Two fur traders, Jim Rainbolt, [Clint Walker], and Shaun Garrett, [Roger Moore], stumble across a massive gold strike that promises a life of wealth if they can keep it safe. Shaun heads to a nearby town to buy a pack horse for transporting the treasure, but he makes a costly mistake by paying with a gold nugget, tipping off the town’s bandits led by the ruthless McCracken, [Gene Evans]. The news of the gold spreads quickly, and McCracken and his men decide to shadow Shaun on his way back to the strike.
Jim and Shaun push toward the remote town of Seven Saints, aware that they are being followed. With 250 pounds of gold on their backs, they realize they cannot outrun their pursuers, so they devise a plan to hide the treasure behind a giant boulder. A tense showdown erupts, and Shaun is wounded in the exchange. Out of nowhere, Doc Gates, [Chill Wills], who had spotted Shaun in town and picked up the rumor of the gold, rides in to help them fend off the bandits. He tends to Shaun’s wounds and is welcomed as a full partner by the two friends.
Seeking safety, the trio finds shelter on the ranch of Amos Gondora, an old friend of Jim’s, where they are introduced to Gondora’s ward, a young Indian maiden named Tita, [Letícia Román]. That night, McCracken’s gang stages a cattle stampede to lure Jim and Gondora away from the ranch, hoping to flush out the hidden gold. When the riders return empty-handed, McCracken and his men sweep the ranch in search of the treasure, capturing Shaun and Doc in the process. Doc Gates is killed when he can’t reveal the gold’s hiding spot, leaving Shaun and Jim in a perilous bind.
Rainbolt tracks down McCracken and his surviving henchmen, leading to a tense gunfight in which McCracken is the last man standing. With Shaun in danger at gunpoint, Rainbolt is forced to guide McCracken to the hidden gold. At the moment of truth, Rainbolt feigns an inability to move the boulder alone, drawing McCracken in close enough to let him lurch the boulder off his leg and trap him. Gondora and his men then arrive and kill McCracken, seemingly ending the immediate threat.
Yet friendship proves fragile. Gondora betrays the trio and demands the gold for himself, sending Jim and Shaun fleeing into the river’s rushing current. The bags of gold break apart in the wild water, and the treasure is lost to the flood. After a brief moment of shared laughter at the turn of events, Gondora reaffirms his stated friendship, leaving Rainbolt and Garrett to reckon with the costs of trust and betrayal as they decide to return to their life of fur trapping.
