In the vibrant nightlife of 1970s New York City, a young girl named Billie, born to a Caucasian father and an African-American mother, faces a difficult childhood. After being taken from her alcoholic lounge singer mother, who is deemed incapable of raising her, Billie finds herself alone, growing up in an orphanage as her estranged father shows no interest in either of them. As years pass, we find Billie, now a 19-year-old played by Mariah Carey, working as a nightclub dancer alongside her foster-care friends, Louise and Roxanne.
Their paths cross with Timothy Walker (played by Terrence Howard), a record promoter who sees potential in Billie and her friends. Timothy offers them a contract to become backup singers and dancers for a singer named Sylk. At first, Billie hesitates, determined to make it on her own, but after some coaxing from her friends, she agrees to join them. Together, they record the hit single, “All My Life,” though Sylk’s subpar vocals lead to a controversial arrangement where Billie sings while Sylk lip-syncs to her performance.
During a pivotal nightclub performance of “All My Life,” Billie catches the attention of the club DJ, Julian “Dice” Black. Realizing Sylk’s lack of talent, Dice approaches Billie backstage to commend her singing. However, when Sylk publicly belittles her backup singers, Billie decides to assert herself, performing an a cappella rendition of the song in front of Dice. Impressed, Dice expresses a desire to produce her, but she initially declines, suspecting his intentions might be exploitative.
After more persuasion, Billie agrees to work with Dice, but her ongoing concerns about her contract with Timothy persist. Tensions rise when Dice threatens to pull artists from Timothy’s nightclub unless he frees Billie and her friends from their contract, leading to a hefty payday exchange for their release. This sets the stage for a fruitful partnership, where Billie and Dice create the underground hit “Didn’t Mean to Turn You On.” As their bond grows deeper, they sign with a significant record label and even begin a romantic relationship.
As Billie’s career begins to soar with her first major single “Loverboy,” complications arise when the music video fails to align with her artistic vision, prompting her to flee the set with Dice’s support. Despite their advances, challenges continue to plague Billie when she meets Rafael, a singer/songwriter with whom she explores new creative possibilities. However, Dice’s jealousy strains their relationship, and Billie is faced with her friends’ ultimatum to choose between them and Dice.
Tragedy strikes as Timothy reemerges, wielding threats of violence due to a debt owed, which leads to an explosive confrontation between him and Dice. While Billie grapples with the fallout of this tumultuous relationship, she channels her distress into songwriting, crafting the powerful single “Want You” alongside Rafael. Just when reconciliation seems possible, Dice’s life is tragically cut short by Timothy, shattering Billie’s dreams once more.
In the aftermath, she commands the stage, revealing the depths of her heartbreak, emphasizing the importance of expressing love to those we cherish. As the haunting notes of “Never Too Far” take flight, Billie discovers a heartfelt note from Dice, revealing his love for her and his plans for their future. The film culminates in a poignant reunion between Billie and her mother, leaving audiences reflecting on the tumultuous journey of love, ambition, and the undeniable bond of family.
