The trial centers on Louie [Douglas Fowley], a local gangster charged with burglary, and Louie’s henchmen fear a conviction, so they decide to target a juror who might swing the vote in their favor. They pick Gildersleeve, and an anonymous note offering him $1000 (about $18,000 today) lands in the pocket of his suit before the day at court.
