Ed Hunter, a New York psychologist, journeys to a remote village in the west of Ireland after his father’s disappearance, drawn by a sense that the truth behind the case lies buried in a place where fear has old roots. He steps into a community that has lived under a shadow for generations, where legends feel close and the ordinary world seems edged with something eerie.
There, he encounters a mysterious girl, Sarah, who speaks in whispers about a debt tied to the past. She tells him that his father was searching for the spirits of a mother and child buried alive in the nearby forest over a thousand years ago, a tragedy born from ancient acts of violence by their own kin. The story hints at a curse that demands repayment, a debt that the living must settle to calm the restless dead. According to Sarah, his father sought help from the village’s priest, a man who holds the answers and the key to unlocking the village’s haunted history. The priest, known to them as Father Paul, soon locks himself inside the church, overcome by fear for his life and the burden of the truth he’s guarding.
As Ed presses on, the priest finally reveals that his father had taken a skull from the site where the mother and child were buried, and that the spirits insist on its return. The priest agrees to guide Ed on a plan to restore what was broken, hoping to appease the restless presence and end the fear that grips the village. Ed resolves to perform the rite, hoping that returning the skull will bring some measure of peace—not just for the land, but for the family he’s determined to understand.
The journey into the stone chambers beneath the church becomes a turning point. While attempting to place the skull back in its rightful place, Ed uncovers the dead body of the real priest and comes to a shocking realization: the man posing as the priest is his own father. The revelation exposes a cruel manipulation, as his father has set a trap to imprison Ed in the same chamber where the mother and child once suffered, a grim parallel to the debt he intends to pay. The atmosphere tightens as the spirits awaken, their presence turning the walls and corridors into a place of judgment.
The confrontation with the spectral force culminates in a grim consequence for the man who wore the priest’s mantle. The spirits claim him as part of the debt, leaving Ed to confront the aftermath and his own uneasy inheritance. In the aftermath, life in the village carries forward with a fragile, uneasy calm, as the living try to reckon with what the dead have demanded.
In the closing moments, the emotional weight shifts to Ed’s personal life. The last scene reveals that his girlfriend, Sarah, is pregnant, suggesting that the cycle of legacy and price paid by the living will continue in new, unforeseen ways. A faint, watchful presence lingers in the village—the spirits, ever vigilant, seem to observe the unfolding of a future already touched by the past.
