Gates to Paradise 1968

In 1212, a Children’s Crusade is set in motion after Jakob claims to have witnessed a vision promising that the innocence of children can free Jerusalem. A monk, Lionel Stander, returning from Jerusalem, joins the voyage and listens to the children’s confessions, slowly realizing that many join not for faith but for more worldly motives—from longing and rejected love to personal desires they hope to fulfill on the road to the Holy City.

Alexander and Bianca are in love with Jakob, weaving a tense love-triangle into the already fragile tapestry of faith and ambition accompanying the crusade. Alexander, who has learned that his adoptive father—and his lover—the Count Ludwig de Vendôme, also a crusader, had killed Alexander’s Greek parents, greets Jakob’s attachment to the Count with a grim mix of jealousy and cunning, a dynamic born from a complicated history he carries with him. The Count is a figure who looms large in Alexander’s memory, a man he had encountered after a quarrel had driven a wedge between them, and this past fuels a dangerous alliance of desire and revenge within the march toward Jerusalem.

Driven by his own hidden scheming, Alexander seizes upon Jakob’s feelings to bend the fate of the crusade to his own ends. As the confessions pile up and the path grows perilous, a chilling truth emerges from Jakob’s own words: the inspiration for the crusade did not come from God, but from the Count himself. This revelation casts doubt on the righteousness of the mission and suggests a fatal flaw in its foundation. With this knowledge, the expedition is revealed as mortally flawed from the start, bound to falter under the weight of human motives rather than divine will.
