Set in the final years of the Kandyan Kingdom, the film centers on a tense period of rebellion and shifting loyalties as Sinhala nobles seek to depose King Sri Wikrama Rajasinghe, a ruler of South Indian Nayakkar descent, and align with British officials who argue their aims are commercial rather than territorial.

In a pivotal meeting, Ehelepola Adigar and John Doyly discuss a bold transfer of power in Kandy. Ehelepola proposes that, if the British help remove the king, they would be allowed to trade in the highlands, so long as the Kandyan social order remains intact. He forces Doyly to swear on the Bible that this order will be preserved. With the support of Bulathgama Disawe and other nobles, Ehelepola organizes a coup, but the uprising falters and the conspirators—and their followers—flee from Kandy.

In retaliation, the king orders punishment for the families of the rebels. The wives face a brutal choice: ritual suicide by drowning or being stripped of nobility and married into the Rodiya caste, regarded as the lowest in Kandyan society. Most choose death, but Tikiri, Bulathgama Disawe’s wife, refuses and is handed to a Rodiya man named Vijaya, the man behind the name Vijaya. The Rodiya community is stripped of dignity, forced to wear coarse garments, and compelled to show deference to upper castes; Tikiri is even made to remove her blouse as a stark symbol of her fall.

Tikiri’s presence stirs tension within the Rodiya group, and Vijaya begins to show unexpected compassion. The two form a quiet, unspoken bond and eventually decide to leave the community to build a life together. They find temporary refuge with a farmer and try to survive by trapping cattle in the forest, attempting to pass as members of a higher caste. Their ruse is uncovered, and they are punished again—tied to a tree, flogged, and Tikiri humiliated once more.

While in the forest, they encounter a group fleeing the advancing British forces. Tikiri suspects they are nobles in disguise, which proves correct when a man offers payment for safe passage to Kandy. Vijaya guides them, but the nobles are captured and the man is executed. Tikiri and Vijaya are also seized but manage to escape back into the forest.

By this point, the British have seized control of Kandy. The Rodiya community is captured and forced to perform for the British, despite protests from Kandyan nobles who had supported the British alliance, including Ehelepola and Bulathgama. During a performance, Tikiri recognizes her husband Bulathgama and meets his gaze, though he pretends not to know her. On Ehelepola’s orders, her blouse is torn again, prompting Vijaya to intervene. The Rodiya leader creates a diversion, allowing Tikiri and Vijaya to escape.

Returning to the forest, they later learn that the Rodiya community has been killed. The film ends with Vijaya and Tikiri standing atop a large rock overlooking a vast valley. End titles state that the British formally annexed Ceylon on February 15, 1815, marking the end of the Kandyan Kingdom. Although colonial rule abolished parts of the caste-based duty system, the film leaves open the question of whether genuine social liberation was achieved or merely replaced by another form of domination.
