In the late autumn of 1988, Zhao Hong leaves mainland China for the United States and marries Thomas, a Chinese American. Now a new arrival in a land of big opportunities and bigger challenges, she wrestles with English, customs, and the ache of distance from family. She imagines a better life and hopes to bring her mother over, but she finds that Thomas’ understanding remains stubbornly out of reach, leaving her to navigate the early days of immigration with quiet resolve.
