In 1999, a decade has passed since the events of the fifth film, and Alice Johnson and her son Jacob have left Springwood behind. However, Freddy Krueger has returned to inflict terror once more and has managed to eliminate nearly all the children of Springwood, Ohio. The only teenager who remains, known simply as “John Doe,” finds himself in a dream confrontation with Freddy. In a twist of fate, John is forcefully propelled beyond the city limits of Springwood, which act as a barrier that Freddy cannot violate. The moment John breaks through this limit, it seals itself, leaving him disoriented and suffering from amnesia after hitting his head on a rock.
Meanwhile, within a shelter for troubled youth, Spencer, Carlos, and Tracy scheme to escape their grim surroundings. Each of them comes with their own harrowing backstory: Carlos has endured physical abuse from his parents, leading to a hearing impairment; Tracy has faced sexual abuse at the hands of her father; and Spencer rebels against his father’s strict control over his life. When John is apprehended by the police, he becomes a resident at the shelter and a patient of Dr. Maggie Burroughs. During her examination, Maggie discovers a newspaper clipping from Springwood tucked away in John’s pocket. Hoping to help him recover his lost memories, she plans a road trip back to Springwood.
In a twist of fate, Tracy, Carlos, and Spencer each sneak into the van aiming for freedom, but their plan unravels when John experiences a hallucination that jeopardizes their safety just outside the town. In their attempts to escape, the group finds refuge in a seemingly abandoned house, which reveals itself to be the infamous 1428 Elm Street, the former residence of Nancy Thompson and Jesse Walsh. While this unfolds, John and Maggie pay a visit to the Springwood Orphanage, where John learns of Freddy’s child, leading him to believe he is linked to Freddy’s legacy since he was spared by the killer.
As night falls on Elm Street, Carlos and Spencer succumb to sleep, becoming easy prey for Freddy. When Tracy is jolted awake by Maggie, she realizes that John remains trapped in the dream world alongside Tracy while trying to save Spencer. After further tragedy strikes, and John is slain by Freddy in his dream, he utters a critical piece of information to Maggie: Freddy’s offspring is a girl. Returning to the shelter, Maggie and Tracy are shocked to find that no one recalls John, Spencer, or Carlos, save for Doc, a fellow patient who possesses the ability to control his dreams.
Maggie then uncovers a shocking truth about her own past through her adoption papers: she is Freddy’s daughter. Doc enlightens them that Freddy’s power is sustained by “dream demons” that resurrect him, and he can only be defeated if brought into the real world. This prompts Maggie to brave the dream realm, intent on confronting her father. As she ventures into Freddy’s mind, armed with 3-D glasses, she uncovers the dark roots of Freddy’s rage, learning about the torment he faced as a child and the heinous acts he committed as an adult.
In an intense clash, Maggie confronts Freddy using various makeshift weapons, fueled by her anger at his past atrocities. Ultimately, she manages to stab Freddy with his own clawed glove, igniting a fierce battle. At a critical moment, Doc tosses Maggie a pipe bomb, and after impaling Freddy to a steel beam, she hurls it into his chest. As she narrowly escapes the impending explosion, Freddy defiantly gazes into the camera and utters, > “Kids.” After the blast, the three dream demons are seen fleeing from Freddy, finally unable to resurrect him in reality. With a triumphant smile, Maggie turns to Tracy and Doc, declaring, “Freddy’s Dead.”
