Four Steps in the Clouds 1942

Paolo Bianchi, a married agent for a candy manufacturer, leads a stable, if somewhat boring, life in a large unnamed city in the North of Italy. He is portrayed by Gino Cervi. His days follow a quiet, dependable routine that fits neatly with his role as a devoted family man.

During a south-bound business trip on the train, Paolo notices Maria, a young woman who has just been abandoned by her boyfriend after learning she is pregnant. Maria, Adriana Benetti, has no ticket and cannot afford one, and she fears that returning to the family farm will expose her pregnancy to her father. The moment reveals the fragile line between dignity and desperation as she pleads for help to stay on the train and, more crucially, for one more favor.

Maria asks if Paolo could pass herself off as her husband for a couple of days, allowing her to claim she was abandoned and spare herself and her family the shame of the situation. He sees this as a small sacrifice to protect her future, and he agrees to take a brief leave from work to accompany her on the journey and to provide the needed illusion of a wife.
