A group of independent filmmakers — Derek, Mark, Amy, Carl, the director Andrew, and production assistant Lily — heads to a secluded cabin in Central Texas to shoot the first-ever 3D found footage horror, Spectre Of Death. To document behind-the-scenes progress, they hire Scott Weinberg, a respected horror critic whose presence promises legitimacy to the project. The setup centers on a script about a feuding couple who endure eerie, supernatural disturbances in a rural hideaway, but the real-life history of the cabin—told in hushed tones as a former owner allegedly killed his wife and hid her body nearby—casts a shadow over the shoot and unsettles [Carl], foreshadowing trouble ahead.

As they settle in, the crew wrestles with the practicalities and philosophies of the found footage format, debating what conventions to honor and what to push. Derek’s controlling approach quickly frays nerves, undermining Amy’s contributions and stirring friction with Andrew. During a day’s review, Mark thinks he spots a shadowy figure lingering in the background of a shot, a nagging suspicion that the camera may be catching more than they intend. The mood darkens when Lily is hurt by a shovel during a confrontation with Amy, and Amy later discovers Mark’s footage of Derek’s harsh words about her. A scripted argument between Derek and Amy erupts into a tense real dispute, and Amy’s scream destroys the kitchen contents, an event Carl attributes to a genuine haunting.

That night, the couple’s private tensions spill into the room, and Derek’s and Amy’s encounter grows physically heated. The following morning, Amy bears a bruise under her eye, a visible sign of the strain tearing at the group. Back in town, Derek celebrates their progress with a bar visit and introduces Scott Weinberg to document the chaos, hoping the presence will lend credibility to their project. Amy laments Derek’s flirtations with Lily, while the others debate how much the film’s reality is shaping their own lives. When they return to the cabin, chaos erupts: nearly everything in Derek’s belongings is wrecked, Carl’s belongings are slicked with slime, and Carl storms off into the woods after another confrontation with Derek. Amy awakens to find her arm mauled and bleeding.

Reviewing the footage with Mark, they realize an unseen third party filmed them as they slept, and an invisible force had physically wounded Amy. A dark, shapeless presence materializes and attacks the two, though only Amy can perceive it directly while filming. Mark insists that he and Amy will leave, and a scuffle with Derek ends with Derek relenting, offering his support if Amy truly wants to go. Amy, however, resolves to stay, and Mark agrees not to abandon her. As they embrace, Amy’s eyes flare with a red glow, a sign of something supernatural at play.

The next day, Scott arrives, unimpressed with the messy, unprofessional shoot. Derek rewrites the film’s climax so his own character appears to survive, much to Andrew’s irritation. While filming a climactic confrontation between them, Amy lashes out with a hammer at Derek. An invisible force seals the door, trapping them inside as tremors shake the cabin. The door is ripped from its hinges, killing Scott, and the black shape lunges through Andrew’s chest, ending his life. Mark and Lily flee into the surrounding woods.

Undeterred, Mark continues filming as the only way to understand the entity’s power, discovering Carl’s bloodied corpse and then witnessing Lily being killed by the same force. Mark hurries back to the cabin, intending to escape in a van, only to hear Amy’s pleading voice over the microphone as he searches for her. He braves the now-ruined cabin to scavenger a portable mic that might help locate Amy.

In the woods, Mark finds Amy just as the entity mauls her again. They manage to get away and drive off, only to crash when a log blocks the road. In a tearful, haunted moment, Amy tells Mark she wishes he hadn’t returned for her, recalling the cardinal rule of found footage — no characters survive. Her eyes glow red once more as she lunges at him, sealing a chilling, fatal conclusion to their ordeal.
