Fortress 1985

In the harsh Australian Outback, Sally Jones is the sole teacher of a tiny one-room school, guiding nine pupils whose ages span from six to sixteen. On what seems like an ordinary day, the younger children report seeing cartoon figures sketched along the edge of the playground. Sally tries to write it off as childish imagination, but the situation quickly spirals out of the realm of fantasy when four armed men wearing Halloween masks storm the classroom, led by a man Sally refers to as Father Christmas because of his festive disguise. They push Sally and the children into a waiting van, and Sally calmly instructs the kids to gather their knapsacks and lunches to come along—she means to keep everyone together and ready for whatever is coming.

Crucially, Sally overhears the men plotting a ruthless ransom: they intend to hold the school hostage and kill one child each day until their demands are met. In a bid to protect the younger ones, she pretends to cooperate while secretly guiding one child to slip away into the woods and seek help. The kidnappers sense the escape and threaten to shoot another child, forcing Sally to call the boy back and reinforce the fragile grip they have on the situation. The group is soon barricaded inside a cave, a far cry from the familiar chalkboards and desks of the classroom.

One perceptive child recognizes the cave as a place they once explored with cousins and notices there may be an alternate exit. Sally and several of the older students venture deeper, discovering this hidden route—an underground river that provides a potential escape. They guide the younger children across the river to safety outside. The party comes upon a farmhouse, only to find the kidnappers have already reached it. An elderly man and his wife resist their intrusion, and the criminals shoot them, a brutal reminder of the stakes at hand. A fellow kidnapper, objecting to the murder, is killed by Father Christmas, heightening the tension and making the group realize the threat has not yet passed.

Back at the farm, the children and Sally confront a more immediate danger: they are locked in a barn with one armed kidnapper while the others head out on a supply run. To pull off a distraction, the oldest schoolgirl is tasked with flirting with the guard, while a boy quietly steals the kidnapper’s shotgun. The ruse works, the kidnapper is killed, but the plan comes at a cost—the boy is badly injured by a stray blast.

With a renewed sense of purpose, the children and Sally flee once more into the Outback. They resolve that passivity won’t save them, and they improvise a counterattack. They locate a cave and fortify it using the strategies they’d learned in class, drawing on indigenous hunting methods to excavate a spike pit and fashion improvised spears from school supplies. The defense pays off in casualties for the kidnappers, and Father Christmas finally reaches the cave, where he is met by Sally and the kids in a tense confrontation.

Months pass, and police investigators visit the school to question Sally about the fate of the intruder. Sally maintains she has no knowledge of the events beyond the effort to protect the children, claiming they rolled a large boulder onto him, killing him instantly. The investigators leave uneasy, unsettled by the children who circle them with a quiet, unsettling calm. As the scene closes, Sally glances at a preserved human heart on display among the school’s science experiments, a stark reminder of mortality in a place meant for learning. Satisfied with her control over the day’s tense aftermath, she dismisses the children from class.
