Based on Susanna Tamaro’s novel, the film follows three generations of Italian women. After matriarch Olga dies peacefully in Trieste, her granddaughter Marta returns from the U.S., finds Olga’s diary and learns via flashbacks that Olga was forced to marry Antonio, later fell for a spa doctor who died in a crash, producing daughter Illaria. Illaria, neurotic, dies in an accident, leaving Marta to be raised by Olga.

The film follows the unhappy lives of three generations of women — Olga, Ilaria, and Marta — told through a diary-like letter written by the elder Olga to Marta before dying. The letter unfolds as a quiet, intimate confession, an attempt to expiate a long family trauma and free Marta from the misery that shadows their bloodline.
Olga recalls her childhood and the clashes with her middle-class parents during adolescence. She begins an affair with a married man, whose identity remains undisclosed, and becomes pregnant with Ilaria shortly before his death. Ilaria grows into a turbulent, strong-willed young woman, forming a strained bond with her mother, a relationship that worsens after she returns from a trip to Turkey pregnant with Marta. In a heated confrontation, Olga reveals Ilaria’s father, upsetting her to the point that, as she drives away, she crashes her car into a tree and dies.
Through the love expressed in the letter, Olga seeks to lift Marta’s heavy familial burden, allowing her to walk toward a future where she can go where her heart takes her.
