Spoilers ahead
On the brink of losing his research grant for studying ancient love spells, a widowed Classics Professor from Oxford travels to the sunlit Greek island of Spetses in hopes of securing one last chance to finish a breakthrough. He is welcomed to stay at the home of a supportive Oxford don, Professor Coulter, and brings along his 12-year-old daughter, Serena—a curious and thoughtful girl who loves discussing myth but worries that her father spends too much time with dusty texts rather than with her. The island’s calm pace offers a provisional balance between study and family, yet the pressure of a looming deadline lingers like a tide just offshore.
