Derrick Tyler is a former college basketball star who has built a successful sports management agency in Los Angeles alongside his best friend, Rafe Grimes, focusing on representing African-American athletes. The venture gives Derrick independence and purpose, but his personal life is strained: his marriage to Tracie, a real estate agent, is distant, and he suspects she may be having an affair. At the same time, Rafe pressures Derrick to let the company be absorbed by a larger corporation, a move Derrick resists in order to preserve his autonomy and identity.

On a business trip to Las Vegas, Rafe nudges Derrick to vent his frustrations through a fling. Derrick sheds his wedding ring and uses a false name—“Darren from Seattle”—to pursue casual encounters, and a chance meeting with a receptive woman leads them to her hotel room. Their night together ends awkwardly as Derrick attempts to slip away the next morning, only to be trapped when the woman locks his cellphone in the room safe and coerces him into a sexual encounter to regain access to his phone.

Back in Los Angeles, Derrick tries to repair his relationship with Tracie, seeking a quiet reconciliation. That same night, Derrick thinks he hears a break-in at their home. The intrusion becomes a real attack by a masked burglar, and Derrick fights him off just as the police arrive. The detective assigned to the case, Valerie Quinlan, turns out to be the Las Vegas woman from Derrick’s recent indiscretion. Valerie’s questions about the break-in veer into leverage and secrets, hinting that she could reveal Derrick’s affair or keep silent for a price. As the investigation unfolds, Valerie’s own past comes into focus: she is obsessed with her ex-husband, Carter Heywood, a local politician, and she has a troubled custody battle over Haley, her daughter who uses a wheelchair after a traumatic incident that left Valerie’s service weapon unattended.

Valerie’s inquiries reveal a painful pattern in her life as she juggles personal vendettas with professional duties. She uncovers that Tracie is having an affair with Derrick’s partner, Rafe. To demonstrate the truth, she gives Derrick a monocular to spy on a beach-house rendezvous, pushing him to confront the reality of Tracie’s infidelity. She also insinuates that Tracie may have hired the burglar who attacked him. The revelation shatters Derrick’s sense of stability and briefly draws him back toward Valerie, even as he confronts Tracie and Rafe. The moment culminates with Derrick discarding his wedding ring, while Tracie coldly mocks him.

The following day brings a new crisis: Derrick is arrested, and Valerie informs him that Tracie and Rafe were murdered shortly after he left them. The sudden turn casts a shadow over his reputation and triggers a proactive legal pursuit that could lead to charges. Realizing that Valerie herself could be the killer, Derrick confides in his cousin Tyrin. Tyrin, aided by a friend, forces entry into Valerie’s apartment in an attempt to extract a confession, but Valerie outmaneuvers them, fatally shooting Tyrin and his companion. In a brutal turn, Valerie offers to frame Tyrin instead of Derrick for the murders if Derrick agrees to kill Carter, who has the leverage to sway the courts and potentially deny Haley a future with her mother.

Desperate and wary of Valerie, Derrick approaches Carter during a jog, but a struggle ends with Carter’s accidental death. He then returns to Valerie’s apartment, where she finally confesses to killing Tracie, Rafe, Tyrin, and Tyrin’s friend, and vows to eliminate anyone who stands in her way of reclaiming Haley. Derrick realizes that this includes him. The two exchange gunfire, and in a final, tense moment, Valerie blindsides Derrick, stabbing him as he fires back. Mortally wounded, Derrick shoots Valerie once more, and as she dies, he reveals that he recorded her confession. He hides the evidence and heads toward the sound of approaching police.

The story ends with the implication that Derrick will face the consequences of the chaos he helped unleash, even as the truth about Valerie’s crimes comes to light.
