Set on the eve of World II, the film follows Pawel, a young man from a conservative middle‑class family, and his passionate affair with Lidka, a taxi dancer. Rigid social norms keep them apart, but when war erupts Pawel is deported to Auschwitz while Lidka marries his cousin. Despite the tragedy, their love endures, making former conventions irrelevant.
