Falkenberg Farewell 2006

Five childhood friends in their twenties—Holger, Holger Eriksson; John, John Axel Eriksson; Jesper, Jesper Ganslandt; Jörgen, Jörgen Svensson; and David, David Johnson—grew up in Falkenberg and spend what they call their “last summer” there before the potential move to Gothenburg.

The film follows their days as they drift around the town and each other, with Holger at the center as he grapples with leaving home and the fear of becoming a cliché. John is gruff and lazy, Jesper is the one who has wandered away before only to return, Jörgen pursues a catering venture with little momentum, and David—quiet, perceptive, and Holger’s best friend—narrates much of the story through his diary. The diary serves as the thread that binds a sequence of vignettes about life in this small town: strolling through nature, swimming in the sea, and a handful of risky pastimes like burglarizing homes that feel more like acts of rebellion than means of survival.

As the summer unfolds, the group confronts parental expectations and the lure of elsewhere, even as Falkenberg’s rhythms—its beaches, forests, and the everyday chores of growing up—keep pulling them back into a familiar routine. Holger’s anxiety about leaving and the risk of becoming another cliché of small-town life contrast with the others’ quieter acceptance that the moment of decision may be just over the horizon.

In a climactic and devastating turn, David finishes his diary and mails it to Holger, then walks into the forest with a shotgun and ends his own life. Holger is overwhelmed by grief, while the remaining friends eventually try to resume their ordinary rhythms, clinging to the belief, as David wrote, that even after such a loss, life goes on.
