Abby Morrison has lived a sheltered life, her days colored by an imaginary boyfriend named Sy who has stood by her since she was five. As an artist, Abby pours her passion into painting, often depicting Sy and shaping vivid visions of what he looks like, turning her internal world into tangible creations on canvas.

When Abby agrees to tutor her roommate’s cynical cousin Quinn, she unexpectedly discovers a real attraction blooming between them. Quinn’s curiosity quickly tangles with jealousy as he fixates on the idea that Abby has a real boyfriend, not realizing that Sy is a figment of Abby’s imagination. In the face of this internal conflict, Abby tries to keep her feelings for Quinn on hold, choosing to remain loyal to the man she has always imagined rather than risk losing the girl he might become.

Thanksgiving brings both a test and a turning point. Abby’s parents invite Quinn to dinner, and Abby’s mother mentions her imaginary friend in front of him, planting seeds of doubt about Abby’s truthfulness. The blunt reminder that Sy isn’t real unsettles Quinn, who begins to pull away, convinced that Abby has been fabricating a barrier between them to keep their relationship steady. He stops seeing Abby and sinks into a growing misery, not fully understanding what he’s lost or what Abby is wrestling with inside.

Amid the tension, Abby reaches a moment of clarity. She recognizes that she must confront reality and let go of Sy. In a bold, symbolic gesture, she asks Sy to leave for good and, for the first time, joins her parents in their unconventional work—decorating the tombstones they have made for themselves—an eerie reminder of life, memory, and art that runs through her family.

Meanwhile, Quinn, seeking guidance and a chance to repair what’s been broken, reaches out to his roommate and cousin for advice and embarks on a search for Abby. His quest leads him to a club he once took Abby to, and there he encounters a revelation: a portrait Abby has painted of him, with an image in the background of Abby at the rink. This discovery is the moment that brings him face to face with Abby again; he finds her there, and a kiss seals a new, fragile connection between them, signaling that Abby’s journey toward reality might still leave room for love, art, and honesty to coexist.
