Rita Mora Castro, a bright yet often overlooked lawyer in Mexico, embarks on a challenging journey when she takes on a high-profile murder case involving the wife of a prominent media magnate. Despite her inner misgivings, Rita puts forth an argument declaring the controversial death a suicide, and this case, known as El Alegato, catapults her into the limelight. However, her victory does not deter an underlying dissatisfaction with her life and career.

Not long after, Rita receives an enigmatic phone call offering a lucrative opportunity that piques her interest, dubbed Todo y Nada. Intrigued, she decides to meet the mysterious caller, which leads her to the shocking revelation that her client is none other than the infamous cartel kingpin, Juan “Manitas” Del Monte. Throughout their meeting, Manitas candidly discloses her deep-seated struggles with gender identity, expressing a heartfelt desire to live authentically as a woman—this request forms the crux of El Encuentro. Despite the trepidation swirling within her, Rita is compelled to assist and embarks on an unexpected journey to find specialized surgeons for Manitas.

Their adventure takes them across continents, leading them to Bangkok for surgical evaluations, as captured in La Vaginoplastia, and to Tel Aviv in search of expertise, referred to as Lady. Ultimately, they encounter a compassionate surgeon who is touched by Manitas’ heartfelt stories of her childhood experiences with gender Diaspora, leading to a crucial moment where the doctor agrees to perform the transformation.

With the surgery completed, Manitas steps into her new identity as Emilia Pérez. In an effort to shield her family amidst the dangers of her past, Emilia’s wife, Jessi, and their children are relocated to Switzerland, while Rita is significantly compensated for her efforts as Emilia orchestrates her own disappearance to sever ties with her former life.

Fast forward four years to London, where fate reunites Rita with Emilia in a twist of circumstances. Emilia confides in Rita her longing to reconnect with her children. Touched by her sentiment, Rita makes arrangements for Jessi and the children to return to Mexico City, presenting Emilia merely as a distant cousin of Manitas. However, upon their return, Jessi remains oblivious to Emilia’s true identity, even as romantic ties to her previous lover, Gustavo Brun, deepen.

As the family assimilates into this new phase of life in Mexico, Emilia faces a life-altering realization during an encounter with a mother of a missing child. This profound moment triggers a wave of guilt regarding her violent past as explored in Mis Siete Hermanos y Yo. Her son later reveals that he still recognizes Emilia’s scent, resulting in a powerful emotional confrontation labeled Papá. Striving for redemption, Emilia utilizes her connections from her past to launch a nonprofit aimed at identifying victims impacted by cartel violence, a mission detailed in Para. Yet, Rita cautions her against accepting support from dubious donors, leading to tensions when Emilia’s endeavor begins to thrive despite the risks.

The plot thickens when Epifanía, a woman grieving for her husband identified by Emilia’s nonprofit, seeks closure—prompting a significant bond and romantic relationship that blossoms into El Amor. Meanwhile, Jessi starts planning a future with Gustavo, even as conflicts arise with Emilia, particularly when she affectionately refers to Jessi’s children as “mine,” inciting fury and resulting in Jessi fleeing with the kids. This leads to a dangerous standoff that reignites older conflicts representing Mi Camino.

In retaliation, Emilia cuts off Jessi’s financial support, putting Gustavo on edge and forcing him to escape the country. Desperate circumstances lead Jessi and Gustavo to kidnap Emilia, demanding a ransom from Rita. Tension peaks as negotiations devolve into chaos during a drop-off, culminating in a violent shootout between the parties involved. In an emotional climax, Emilia reveals her true identity to Jessi, recounting details from their shared past.

A maelstrom of emotions ensues as Jessi, though shaken, flees with Gustavo in a turn of events that spirals into calamity. Overwhelmed with guilt and revelations, the trio is embroiled in a violent struggle for control over a weapon, ultimately resulting in a fatal car crash that claims the lives of Jessi, Gustavo, and Emilia.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, Rita bears the weight of delivering the heartbreaking news to Jessi’s children, offering to step into the role of guardian. All the while, Epifanía, along with supporters of Emilia’s nonprofit, honor her legacy through marches advocating for truth and liberation, embodying the spirit of Las Damas Que Pasan. Through these tumultuous events, the film weaves a story of identity, redemption, and the enduring connections of love and family, leaving a resonating impact long after the credits roll.
