Tina Marie Risico, Shawnee Smith, a pretty teenage girl with low self-esteem, is spending time at the shopping mall when she is approached by a man claiming to be a photographer looking for new models. Tina follows the man to his van in the parking lot, where she is abducted, raped and taken away.

The man, Gerald McRaney Christopher Wilder, keeps Tina for a cross-country road trip, with the constant threat that he plans to kill her when he gets bored of her. After a long trek through motels and highway stops, the two form a disturbingly awkward bond, as the miles grind on and fear blends with a strange, unsettling familiarity.

During their travels, Wilder shows moments of unsettling humanity—at one point, he consoles Tina when she breaks down crying and even allows her to eat at a dine-in restaurant with him instead of forcing her to stay in the van. The uneasy dynamic between captor and captive deepens the emotional complexity of their situation, blurring lines between coercion and dependence.

Tina develops Stockholm syndrome and proceeds to stay at Wilder’s side despite his acts of abuse toward her. The truth behind Wilder’s predatory behavior becomes increasingly chilling as Tina discovers that he is killing other women and girls, and she reluctantly aids him in luring another underage girl from a shopping mall—the same brutal method that initially snatched Tina herself.

As the nightmare unfolds, Wilder decides to let Tina go, buying her an airplane ticket home and even kissing her farewell. Tina is left torn by conflicting feelings: traumatized by the kidnapping and abuse, yet also missing him in a way that unsettles her more than the danger she faces back with her family. Her return home creates a complicated emotional storm for those who care about her, who are eager to understand what happened and why she has changed.

The pursuit of justice intensifies when a violent confrontation with police culminates in Wilder being shot and killed in a gas station parking lot, bringing a brutal end to a terrifying cross-country odyssey.
