Early to Bed 1941

With the clock finally outside of him, he tries to return to bed and catch a moment of peace. Peace, however, remains elusive. As he switches off the lights, his folding bed—once a simple sleeping platform—suddenly snaps shut, trapping him inside. The mechanism whirs and groans, and he struggles as the bed’s springs launch him high toward the ceiling. The sequence cuts back to a reset button of sorts: he reappears in bed again, only this time the entire structure has morphed into a precarious contraption nailed to the floor with boards and ropes. He settles beneath the covers, hoping the worst has passed, but the broken clock’s alarm rings anew with a stubborn insistence that shakes the room.

He bolts upright as the setup collapses around him, and his bed literally blasts apart, sending him arcing through the air. He crashes back down onto a bed that is now nothing more than a plank—a board with tacks sticking up like jagged teeth—while a lone sock lands nearby on a spring, wobbling and swaying in a serpentine motion that imitates a wry, animated snake charmer.
