Biren Dutta [Anjan Dutt] is a lawyer whose career never takes off, leaving him with no clients and a life that feels tanglingly incomplete. His wife, Rita [Rita Koiral], battles alcoholism, and the couple’s children watch as the pressures of work, love, and loyalty pull at the seams of their small world. In a choice that will echo through the family, Biren carries on an extramarital affair with his only client, a secret that saturates the air of their home with unspoken tension.
China [Arpita Chatterjee], Biren and Rita’s daughter, experiences a first rush of independence that quickly becomes a test of family boundaries. She falls for Ghenti Kaku [Shankar Chakraborty], a man around her father’s age, and later becomes involved with a different love she pursues alongside a partner entangled with the Naxalite movement. When she runs away with him without seeking her parents’ permission, the family’s通常 calm is shattered, leaving Biren to confront the consequences of love crossing political fault lines and the cost of choices made in the heat of adolescence.
Rono [Ranodeep Bose], Biren and Rita’s teenage son, returns home from boarding school as the financial strain on the household intensifies. Biren dreams of steering Rono toward a legal career as a barrister, but the boy’s heart leans toward the stage, longing to become an actor instead. This push-and-pull creates a quiet, ongoing clash between fatherly expectations and a son resolute to forge his own path, a tension that threads through the family’s days.
Into this family story steps Biren’s father—the grandfather [Dipankar Dey]—who had once left the house but now returns with a different kind of gift: a music school. The new sounds filling the home bring a surprising warmth and a sense of renewal. The music school gradually loosens the grip of despair, giving the family moments of shared purpose and small victories that soften even the sharpest edges of their struggles. China returns home later, accompanied by her Naxalite husband, and Biren, after a moment of hesitation, accepts the evolving loyalties within his family. The couple eventually settles in the United States, signaling a relocation that mirrors the larger shifts within the household.
The story intensifies when one of Rono’s Naxalite friends hides in the house to evade the police. Biren, unaware of the full danger at the doorstep, finds himself in a tense confrontation with the law when officers come to search for the boy. The situation becomes more complicated as the police take the young man away to a station, where he is beaten, and return him three days later. The dramatic turn forces Biren to reckon with the fragility of family safety in a world where law, politics, and personal loyalties collide. The pressure proves too much for him, and he retreats inward, stopping his usual conversations with those around him, his voice muted by the weight of what he has witnessed and what he has failed to protect.
Despite the hardships, the story closes on a note of cautious optimism. In a hopeful echo of artistic possibility, Rono secures a role in a film directed by Mrinal Sen, a moment that signals a turning point not only for him but for the family’s sense of possibility. The movie’s ending leaves the Dutta household standing at the edge of new beginnings, with the promise that art, resilience, and renewed bonds can help heal the wounds of a difficult past.
