Florence Kennedy Florence Lake has arranged a rehearsal for a part in a play for an amateur dramatic society at a fellow actor’s home, but wishes to keep it secret from her husband Edgar Edgar Kennedy, who leaves before the rehearsal begins.

Edgar becomes suspicious about his wife’s behavior and, with the help of the cabbie Harry Bowen, follows to spy on Florence, hoping to uncover what he suspects is going on behind his back. The arrangement sets the stage for tension between trust and doubt, turning a quiet evening into a quiet pursuit through the margins of a small town. The rehearsal itself centers on a tightly staged scene about a clandestine affair: Florence appears as one of the lovers, and in the performance the man is shot dead, though a dummy is used to stand in for the actor as the weapon falls to the ground.

Edgar misreads the onstage drama as a real-life betrayal and murder, glancing at the dramatic tableau through a window and feeling convinced of Florence’s supposed infidelity. He vows to help his wife, > to the bitter end, < and, in a impulsive bid to protect her, locks Florence in a large cupboard. He grows more frantic as the line between stage and reality blurs, and soon he is carrying the prop body away in a large basket, determined to dispose of it to aid his wife, still entirely unaware that the “corpse” is merely a dummy.

What follows is a comic misadventure that tumbles through a series of slapstick misunderstandings. Edgar encounters a string of cops and curious townspeople who mistake him for a murderer and manage to capture him, adding to the mounting confusion and embarrassment. The chase and the misperceptions ripple outward, drawing in neighbors and bystanders who rally around the mounting rumor of murder, all while Florence tries to set the record straight.

In a final turn of clarity, Florence catches up with Edgar and patiently unveils the full story: the dead body was never a real person but a prop used in the rehearsal. She explains everything to him, the police, and the townspeople, revealing that the chaotic sequence was all part of a staged scene in a play and not a real crime. The misunderstanding dissolves, and the couple can breathe freely again, having learned that a moment of panic and a misread performance can spiral into far more trouble than the truth ever intended.
